Anthony Edwards vs James Harden

18.2 vs 18.3 PER
0.109 vs 0.103 WS48
2.8 vs 3.1 BPM
+3.1 vs +4.8 On/Off
58.1 vs 56.7 TS%
3.3 vs 2.8 EPM
Team Record 21-18 vs 21-17

I feel like the next Jordan shouldn't be having an identical season to 35 year old harden who forgot how to shoot.

Edwards is very young and harden is really good

The jordan comparision was premature/blown out of proportion but i think he still can "easily" (heavy air quotes here) become this era vince carter level player or better.

A super athletic 6'6 wing with good shooting and solid all around skills. He also has shown nice defensive chops

ANT vs VC in their age 23 season

ANT
25.9/5.7/4.2/1.3/0.6
PER - 18.2
BPM - 2.7
WS/48 - 0.107
TS - 58.1% (+0.7% higher than league average)

VC
25.7/5.7/3.9/1.3/1.1
PER - 23.4
BPM - 5.5
WS/48 - 0.182
TS - 54.3% (+2.1% higher than league average)

VC was soooooooo much better at the same age. Injuries and lack of desire was his downfall. VC actually used his athleticism to play defense. Raptors VC was different, he was an amazing offensive player and a fantastic defender (some of his help side blocks, a guard shouldn't be able to do that).

Ant is probably having the best 3 pt shooting season from a player (obviously excluding Steph) in recent times. Excellent efficiency at high volume 3 pt shooting

I mean, he's been volume scoring since he hit the league.

KG didn't score 20 ppg until his third season (18.5, really), and it took that long before he was averaging 4+ apg as well.

Love ALSO took until his third season before he was averaging 20+ ppg (14 ppg in his second season), and didn't average over 2.5 apg until his 6th season.

So based on usage, it isn't really that much of a surprise.

Edwards had a slow stretch this season, but since Ant made his comment about "hating double teams" he's taken a major leap forward as a player. During that 33 game stretch Edwards is averaging:

29.6 points
5.3 assists
6.2 rebounds

His shooting splits are:

49% from 2 (10.4 attempts)
40% from 3 (10.4 attempts)
85% from FT (8.5 attempts)

What has changed? The first obvious thing that has changed is Edwards has learned to excel against teams putting 2 on the ball and blitzing, trapping, etc. This type of coverage no longer bothers him and he can beat it in a number of ways. He makes a lot quicker decisions and finds the open 3 point shooter, or gets off the ball and gets it back while moving, attacks open sides of the court before the blitz comes, makes pocket passes to the big on the roll with the advantage, and pretty much every tool that you want.

He has become much better at starting off ball and running through traffic, catching the ball in different spots of the floor, and attacking. He's also become a lot better at playing at his own pace and getting to spots on the floor, drawing coverage to him, and throwing the lob pass or kicking out to the weakside corner depending on how teams cover. And lastly, he's the best shooter off the dribble of anyone in the league -- he's shooting something like 42% on stepback and off the dribble 3's this year that are unassisted.

This has really opened up Ant's game to play much more through the flow and connected to his teammates which helps make the overall offense flow a lot more smoothly. Teams started to blitz Ant and put 2 on the ball aggressively near the end of last season and into the playoffs. This exposed the Wolves offense and Ant as he didn't know how to attack this defense and it could make him frustrated and take him completely out of the game. As Ant typically does, he gets enough reps and then he starts executing at an extremely high level.

The other major improvement -- partially because of what I mentioned above Ant has been able to become a player who in the top 5 in free throws per game. Ant is better at using his pace and handle to put defenses in a position to react to him and going up through contact as opposed to trying to out athleticism defenders at the rim and defenders getting the verticality benefit because the advantage wasn't created and Ant would try to go through the verticality of the defender. Ant's ability to be a top 5 3 point shooter on volume and an elite 3 point shooter combined with consistently getting to the free line-- has allowed him to score consistently at a higher volume than he has in the past.

There is one remaining hole in Ant's game that he shows flashes of doing, but isn't consistent is that Ant does not have midrange spots on the floor that he can get to, force defenses to guard him in those spaces, and make at a 50-60% like Shai, Giannis (now), Luka, Booker, Durant, etc. He needs to work on getting to spots on the floor intentionally that don't involve him trying to get all of the way to the rim or pulling up from 3. One of the problem's that Ant has, is that he can score against every defense in every situation. But his best shots involve either trying to rely on his ability as an athlete to make tough contested layups in traffic or his 3 point shot. Those shots are closer to a 40% rather than >50% shots most of the time. This is one of the reasons that Ant can struggle in the clutch and holds him back from being able to truly carry an elite contending team offensively consistently.

If Ant could get to the middle of the floor and have spots on the floor that defenses have to play him extremely tight on, this will open up other parts of Ant's game. These shots are shots players can get on any possession they want. This is also how you get to the free throw line consistently because you can use your footwarkk and your knowledge that you're going to a spot to make defenses reactive and reach. This would also help Ant get the next level as playmaker.

This is not to say that Ant "doesn't" have this ability but I think too often Ant is shooting a midrange shot as plan B after his drive got stopped... rather than intentionally getting to spots at his rhythm. He has taken some steps here which is why his playmaking and FT attempts have increased. But he's still a level down from Brunson, Shai, Booker, Kyrie, etc.

Even with this limitation, the steps he has taken in terms of attacking playing a 2-man game as a scorer and passer, off ball, as a 3 point shooter, getting to the FT line, and scoring 30 ppg on 60.5% TS against the highest percentage of different types of double/multiple defender looks designed to keep him out of the game, footwork, and better ability to play within the flow in a way that keeps teammates evolved has really helped him take a major leap forward.

In my opinion, if Ant is averaging 30 points 5-6 rebounds 5-6 assists while making 40%+ of his 3's on top 5 volume, making >40% of off the dribble 3's, comfortability as a scorer and playmaker in 2-man game, ability to win and score 30+ point level against the highest percentage of coverages where teams throw 2+ defenders at him, and get to the FT line at a top 5 rate is a top 5 player.

If you look back in my post history, I made a post on the general board about Ant taking the jump into being a top 20-25 player in the second half of his 2nd year in the NBA. Consisently, each year Ant has taken jumps around the half way mark of the season to the next level in his development. I am going to call my shot and say he's going to be a top 5 player going forward.

Comparable statistics. Yawning chasm of difference in play style, though.
