Omitting outlier votes seems counterintuitive. Sansterre's 2nd place vote for Schayes was well argumentated and it'd only serve to discourage people from going against the consensus opinion, since their outlier vote wouldn't be taken into the equation anyway.

Yeah, definitely. I offered a statistical solution in case of a tied situation. We're here to discuss and discouraging discussions indeed would not be nice.
The issue with per75 numbers;
36pts on 27 fga/9 fta in 36 mins, does this mean he'd keep up the efficiency to get 48pts on 36fga/12fta in 48 mins?
The answer; NO. He's human, not a linearly working machine.
Per75 is efficiency rate, not actual production.

We could drop the ratings to 5-4-3-2-1. Even had all of Schayes' fifth place votes been split between Iverson and Embiid, my one second place vote for Schayes would have trumped them (six fifth place votes < one second place vote).

Then again, this may be a hypothetical that won't occur. I was more bullish on Schayes than most, but even if I'd ignored him he'd still have crushed Iverson and Embiid.

I see no reason why someone would take it personally. If all players top vote would be omitted then it wouldn't "discourage" anyone in particular.

There is no logical reason why if someone wanted to vote a player for #2 they would all of a sudden vote for them for #5 because they'd say "well, it'll be omitted anyway". That wouldn't make sense.

If someone is bullish on a player then the incentive to give a high vote remains the same, and the impact of the vote would still be there it would just not be as large.

Example:

If Dolph Schayes 2nd place vote had gone to Hal Greer instead and everything else stayed the same, Hal Greer would have had more points than everyone else (including Schayes who had 6 5th place votes). Greer would get in if it were only based on totality of points by the virtue of one person's votes despite no one else thinking he should even rank. So the point system wouldn't be balanced in that scenario.
