From ESPN. Who knows why all three post different numbers.

Basketball reference and nba.com use different numbers because BBR estimates the number of possessions in a game while nba.com tracks the actual number of possessions. That’s the only difference.

As far as ESPN I will admit that up until now I didn’t even know they had their own version of the stat but I’ve never heard anyone mention it and without any insight into their formula I wouldn’t take their numbers very seriously.

If I remember correctly it's the opposite way around for BBR/NBA

BBR glossary says the following:

Poss
Possessions (available since the 1973-74 season in the NBA); the formula for teams is 0.5 * ((Tm FGA + 0.4 * Tm FTA - 1.07 * (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)) * (Tm FGA - Tm FG) + Tm TOV) + (Opp FGA + 0.4 * Opp FTA - 1.07 * (Opp ORB / (Opp ORB + Tm DRB)) * (Opp FGA - Opp FG) + Opp TOV)). This formula estimates possessions based on both the team's statistics and their opponent's statistics, then averages them to provide a more stable estimate.

It’s also something they mention on Dunc’d on a lot. I’m about 80% sure I have it right but can’t find another source online.

EDIT: it would also make sense for nba to have it due to the tracking data they possess.

Was there a particular year when shooting last second shots with the game already being decided became frowned upon?
It happened up until the 80s without much controversy and I seem to recall somebody (Van Exel?) doing it as late as the mid 90s without any trouble either. By mid 00s, running up the score in the final seconds was definitely condemned even by the team's own announcers. Can we narrow down the time frame further between mid 90s and early 00s as to when the majority of the league started dribbling out the clock or was it a slow and gradual shift in terms of what was expected at the end of the game?

Just a fun little stat to keep an eye on: after 11 games Kyle Lowry’s on/off is +34.5.

Not only. nba.com doesn't count team ORBs and team TOVs. And while BBR's numbers are estimations, they are more accurate and closer to counted from pbp (like wowy does).

That seemed impossible to me so I checked his game logs and his highest single game +/- was a +29. Per game looks like +13.6. Am I missing something?

On/off also takes into account what happens when a player is not playing. Toronto are getting killed when Lowry sits (-16.5, which is the difference between Toronto's ORTG and the other team's ORTG), while they destroy teams when he plays (+16.1) so his total is really high (32.6 currently according to basketball-reference.com).

Right right, thanks.

I just realized Giannis is averaging 29/15/7/2/1 per 36 right now. That is absurd. He's only playing 31 MPG, so when he ramps up in the playoffs, we could see some ridiculous stat lines. Bucks vs Raptors could be an incredible series if the two teams continue their current trajectories.

I think what's even more encouraging is how well the team is playing with him only having to play 31 mpg. I have to admit I thought Kidd was going to make a really good coach, but its clear the upgrade to Coach Bud has been a significant one.

I really wish the Bucks would make a play for Butler, but I don't expect it.

Does anybody have career relative TS% calculated for a fair number of players?

I did in the past but when I changed jobs I forgot most of my work was done on my work computer.

Bummer, but no worries :)

Jimmy Buckets to the Sixers for Roco and Saric. Any initial thoughts on the trade for either side? I'm still processing.

Like it for both. At this point Minnesota wasn't doing better and he's apparently willing to stay longterm so like it for Philly. I could see him getting along really well w/ Embiid and Simmons. I think this puts Philly up a level in the east.

I like frontcourt of Covington, Saric and Towns

The Eastern conference is now the stronger conference. 3 teams, potentially 4 including the Bucks, that would give the Warriors a tougher time than anyone in the West.

If I was Philly I would've tried to keep RoCo and trade Fultz. But otherwise, great trade.

Do you think Thibs starts Saric over Gibson? I'm skeptical.

The deal only gets done if Minnesota gets a win now piece. That was a known from the start and anything other than that was not a possibility.

Not a chance. Minnesota can look to move Dieng but that is going to be difficult. In all likelihood he will need to be moved for a wing with a similar quality contract.
