Lanier was a tier below defensive player than Mutombo was. And was a better offensive force than Billups. Combine the two, Lanier still could be a comparable player to that hybrid. Both had not a longevity edge, either.

Billups was more efficient and a better playmaker relative to his position; pace adjusted scoring in their prime is similar. Lanier's prime is certainly longer but his defense, outside of one year, was suspect. He wasn't a tier below Mutombo, that's guys like Moses or Karl Malone. He was a lot worse defensively (and a lot better offensively) than Mutombo, and worse in both respects than Billups but has a significant longevity advantage in terms of prime play over Chauncey. So, the relative positioning of all three is certainly arguable depending on your criteria. The 70s, however, are certainly a weaker era than the 90s/00s due to expansion and league jumping, etc. though your weighting of that may differ.
