Look--Jordan was a great plaer. But like a lot of great players his excellences get exaggerated (lots of younger posters here say that about Wilt...) In general, Jordan's athleticism is overrated. He's not in the class of say a David Thompson purely as an athlete. maybe not even in Vince Carter's class, and I'm no Carter fan, or David Robinson's..Jordan was a very good athlete, yes--but not an outlier like Thompson or LeBron. His sucess was not based on his athleticism--there have been quite a few better pure athletes in the NBA than Jordan.

Jordan was not an outlier athletically? Now you're just exaggerating.

Speaking of first steps, Sprewell, young Tmac, and Hill all had incredible first steps.

Jordan was definitely an outlier of an athlete. His lowest ranking all time, athlete wise, would still be top 10. I would say he's a top 5 athlete of all time without thinking twice. How was Thompson a better athlete than Jordan? The only argument would be leaping ability but if anything they are a wash in that department.

Even when Jordan was past 30 I still marveled at his athleticism. He's DEFINITELY an outlier. The only reason I would think to put LeBron over MJ as an athlete is because of the Size argument (Shaq wasn't more nimble than MJ...but did that matter much?)

I understand what you're getting at, but when you can do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EfHnG-e-vE

And are one of the quickest athletes for your size, described almost universally as "very strong," you have to be considered as an outlier, no?

I think Pippen was a better athlete, so I suppose it might be an issue of semantics. And how in the world is *Vince Carter* a better athlete????

Lebron. Silly thread.

Lebron had all the athletic ability of MJ in a 6'8 250+ pound body to boot.

Lebron could be an elite WR in the NFL for crying out loud.

Jordan FT line dunk is the most overrated dunk of all-time. First of all most people who have immortalized that dunk are ignorant of the fact that Dr. J invented it and also ignorant of the fact that heck even Brent Barry could do that dunk and he did it from further back than MJ.

If anyone think Jordan is a better athlete than Lebron, they are defining athlete far too much by skill over physical talent.

This is ridiculous. You guys are pretending like MJ and Lebron are the two most athletic guys in the history of the league. It's not even close to being true. They probably wouldn't even be in the top 20.

Lebron's athleticism is being over-rated and MJ's even more so.

For Example, is Lebron more athletic than a young Shawn Marion ? Nope. Was Jordan more athletic than James White, nope. not even close.

There are people here insinuating that Jordan was quicker than TJ Ford, Leandro Barbosa, Devin Harris, Tony Parker, Allen Iverson, Nate Robinson,

I mean you guys are pretending like the guy never got a shot blocked, or never failed to blow past his man.

lol @ James White being a better athlete than MJ. White has ONE athletic attribute over MJ, and that's one-footed leaping. That's it. Jordan is a better two-footed leaper, leaper off a hop step, and then absolutely smokes White in speed, quickness, explosiveness (i.e., acceleration), body control, reflexes etc. What a joke.

The only thing that James White is even comparable in is his leaping ability.

Well to be fair to White, couldn't he have been a track star in multiple different events such as jumping and the 200m? That's pretty insane. Let's not act like it is preposterous to compare MJ to White. White is one of the best athletes we've ever seen.

Shawn Marion is also a hell of an athlete. He used to jump out of the building and had some great speed and quickness. While I don't think he is as good of an athlete as MJ or Lebron, he's still an amazing athlete.

He's really not, though. There are at least a dozen athletes currently playing in the NBA who I'd take over him (in their primes). Never heard anything about him being elite in the 200m or any sprinting event. I find it hard to believe from having watched him play, as his speed is nothing special.

I'm pretty sure that in high school or college or something he was a very good sprinter. And I remember reading that coaches were trying to get him to train as a jumper of some sort because he seems to have some unreal ability.

I could be completely wrong though...

Athletically there is a huge difference between Lebron and Jordan. Lebron is obviously far more athletic than Jordan.

I could name some other players in the league that are more athletic or were more athletic than MJ:

Vince Carter
Jason Richardson
Andre Iguodala
Shawn Marion

Lets not even start with scrubs like James White.
