Anybody here collect basketball cards? What are your favorites? What memories do you have of cards?

I posted a thread on the General Board, but perhaps I should have posted here instead:

I used to be a big basketball card collector. Have a bunch of Duncan, Garnett and Kobe rookies. My favorite is a signed Garnett High School card that I acquired by trading Keith Van Horn jersey card and a random Iverson rookie.

Interestingly I was less into basketball cards than I was in to others. An '89 Score Barry Sanders was my favorite.

But unfortunately, all that burned in a fire. It was years ago so don't get too empathetic about it, I'm fine. But yeah, all gone.

Incidentally, I find myself enthralled with the degree to which GS is dominating at this point. Here's the current raw +/- seasons leaders for as far back was b-r has the data ('00-01):

1. LeBron '08 +871
2. Curry '15 +842
3. Green '15 +796

Crazy.

Also for the heck of it, other Warriors:
13. Thompson +689
50. Iguodala +568

Seems like there's a strong shot both Green and Curry top 871. The absolute highest on current record are:

96 Jordan +980
96 Pippen +899

Pippen might also be touchable.

That's rough. :(

I love the simple design of 1988-89 Fleer. The color borders that match the team colors, the font, that the background is mostly black in most of them. Yeah, these are my favorites from a design perspective, though 1989-90 Hoops might be my favorite for sentimental reasons.

i love how both the card you posted above as well as your profile pic have dantley with his signature massaging of the ball

i was into trading cards with friends as a kid, and then a few years later actually got pretty serious into buying and selling on eBay (late 90s / early 2000s). First it was just selling cards in my collection. Then a friend and I started buying retail boxes of cards, opened all the packs, and would resell the most expensive cards and split the profits.

Still have a large collection sitting at home in my parents' house, but as far as I know the market has really depreciated. Will probably be at least another 20 years before they're worth anything of value. Always fun to go through when i'm back visiting, though.

I recently re-watched game 5 of the '97 finals, the famous "Flu Game", for the first time since '97, and I'm still amazed how Utah didn't win that game. If I hadn't known the final score, I would've assumed the Jazz were going to blow the Bulls out of the water. They started 18-8, Bulls seemed to be completely dismantled at that point, and it felt like the Jazz were in control most of the game. MJ scored 38, but oddly enough, I didn't feel like he was really dominant (still, extremely impressive considering that he was sick). Stockton had a great look for 3 with about 1:25 left in the 4th and missed, with Utah up one. Had he made that, I really doubt the Bulls would've won, and leading 3-2 going to Chicago, they would've had a great chance to win the finals.
Damn, it almost felt like the Jazz were cursed - Malone not fouling intentionally with about 15 seconds, Jazz down one, is still something that I can't understand (he would've fouled out, but still, the Bulls wouldn't have gone for an easy basket). Also, he looked horrible in the second half, and his airball from near the 3-point line in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter, was a great example of how "unclutch" he was. Outstanding player, but he never seemed to deal well with pressure (his two missed free throws at the end of game 1, and MJ making the game-winner, was just a perfect representation of both guys, when it comes to clutch moments).

I've got a mint or near-mint condition Barry Sanders rookie card. I think it's worth about $40-50.

Most of my basketball cards are NBA Hoops, circa 1990. I do have some......Fleer??, can remember the brand from like 1982 also. I've got a handful of great players in those: Bobby Jones, for one.

Speaking of great players, :cough:, final three spots of top 100....

As far as I remember the dominant brands went something like this:

Topps through 1981.
Star from maybe 1982 to 1985.
Fleer from 1986 to 1989.
And then with the '89-90 season competition came in with Hoops.

Was going through some stuff in my storage unit and found Topps Finest Steve Nash rookie and NBA Hoops Shawn Kemp rookie.

Just caught stephen jackson on the grantland basketball hour. This guy needs to be on TV. Very comfortable, had good insight, and left me wanting more. You can watch his segment here:

Apparently he lives in atlanta, so TNT / NBA TV would probably grab him, but ESPN could use him on their studio show. Whether or not he'd actually want to do it is another question entirely.

I liked his segment on the show. He was pretty well-spoken and his story about how Duncan made him sneak out of training camp against Pop's wishes for paint-balling was jokes . Also, loved it that he wasn't politically correct when they asked him about Ibaka. If you dislike someone, you dislike someone.

Do you have a full set of old Topps cards? :o

I've got the first 4 Fleer sets and the first 6 Hoops sets. I'd LOVE some full Star or Topps sets! I've just got some cards of some favorite players - maybe 100 or so in total across any pre-Fleer sets.

He and Artest should seriously get together and do a special. He's honest and Artest would be hilarious, just to have them meet up again. Agreed he'd be a good studio guy too.

Yeah, it's funny that even though Malone was better in '98, '97 was the series that got away. In '98 they really didn't have a chance (the Bulls won a game by 42 for crying out loud... a FINALS game!!).
