is Kareem's scoring enough to offset Duncan's defensive/rebounding advantage ?

Duncan is a GREAT GREAT player and one of the best ever but to compare him to KAJ is just insane.

peak Kareem is dominant, peak Duncan is really really good. Duncan is a top 10 player because of his consistently very good play and success in the post season. Kareem is a GOAT candidate because of his incredible peak play and accolades/post season success.

This is clearly KAJ. Everyone already stated this in a thread back, as well as Wilt being better as well.

Was Duncan a better rebounder or even defender?

Kareem all around was better, but I don't think the GAP is HUGE if you just take the two from their primes. Prime Duncan was very very good and wouldn't be a joy for Kareem to go against. The gap is pretty big but I don't think its HUGE.

oh and in terms of peak/prime play I think Shaq >>> Kareem >>> Duncan.

take it for what it's worth:
tim duncan
Code: Select all
peak_trb% 19.6
career_trb% 18.5
team_drtg_97 29th
team_drtg_98 2nd
team_drtg_99 1st

team_drtg_08 3rd
team_drtg_09 5th

consider other great defenders like robinson, bowen and ginobili when using team_drtg
kareem abdul-jabbar
Code: Select all

team_drtg_85 7th
team_drtg_86 7th
team_drtg_87 7th

i only used team_drtg for la since i'm lazy. but the formula for drtg prior to 74 is somewhere on the stats-board...just in case you might want to check on milwaukee.
i would agree on duncan being the better rebounder/defender, but kareem's edge on offense seems much bigger. higher volume, higher efficiency and similar passing abilities - he's called the greatest offensive center for a reason.

There's a significant gap in terms of scoring volume, because Kareem shot more and was better at it....
Duncan was and remains better than prime Kareem on the glass... not a lot, but a little bit. Extremely similar as passers, too, and Duncan was a little less turnover-prone (but again, Kareem scored a lot more and on noticeably better efficiency).
I still think this is Kareem... he was just an absurd talent.
