Evaluating the championship ring's value without finals MVP

Post#1 » by jzmagik » Mon Jun 6, 2011 11:10 pm

Obviously this has been a hot issue of debate recently. Looking into there have been plenty of superstars that have not won all the finals mvps for their rings, including Isiah, Magic, Kareem, Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, and Bird.

How would you rank their ring values in those years without the finals mvp? Where would a potential finals mvp less Lebron ring rank?

It doesn't really matter, since kobe has 5 and 2mvps, but is still praised more than shaq

I agree, although any hater will use it against the player to diminish the championship somehow.

It does matter because realgm and kobe haters used that excuse t dimish kobes first 3 rings, but now lebron fans are saying it doesn't and shouldn't matter.

Is Duncan's legacy diminished because Tony Parker won a finals MVP in 2007? Is Magic's legacy diminished when James Worthy won a finals MVP? In time, it wont matter.

I judge it based on playoff and regular season not just the finals.

Obviously Duncan was a better player but Parker won finals MVP. Saying that Parker led the Spurs to a ring just isn't true.

It matters for kobe because he was a clear numero dos. Duncan or whom ever you're trying to argue against was generally the clear best player on their team.

The Finals MVP, like the majority of awards, is completely meaningless.

Doesn't matter in Lebrons case he could win counting this season the next six and 3 mvps and they would all ring hollow if they are in MIami . Due to the fact that he is a quitter and took the easy way out thye will be meaningless to most fans of the game . The miami Heat will ruin the NBA unless a hard cap is put in place in the offseason that forces the HEat to have to implode you can book it .

If it's just about how one performs in the FInals then it's completely useless and probably the dumbest of all the awards. Pau clearly outplayed Kobe in the finals last year and yet Kobe won the award. The only way to justify that is to say that it is about more than just the play in the finals (which actually makes some sense)

plz gasol didnt show up for 3 of the games and the finals game where kobe shot 6-24 he had 15 boards and scored 10 points in the 4th.

game 7:

pierce 5-15
allen 3-14
artest 7-18
odom3-8
gasol 6-16 and 7-13 from ft line

this is what you mean by gasol outplaying him in the finals right? because before game 7 everyone was saying he would win finals mvp even if the lakers lose

:nonono: at when people don't even use good examples to prove their point.

Duncan already had three Finals MVPs when Parker won in 2007.

Magic already had three Finals MVPs when Worthy won in 1988.

How are those equivalent situations to this year should the Heat win and LeBron not win Finals MVP, when the aforementioned players won Finals MVP when they won their first rings and went on to win several more Finals MVPs before another teammate broke through?

The main criticism that Lebron gets is that he didn't win anything without Wade. If Wade wins the Finals MVP that'll be the icing on the cake.

Won't matter much for LeBron because he's clearly been the best player on the Heat for the entire post-season even if he doesn't get Finals MVP.

MPG/PPG/APG/RPG/SPG/TS% all go to him over Wade.

He's been the best closer/clutch-player and defender.

This championship is his.

It's similar to Duncan and Parker though, because Duncan was the best player through the first 3 rounds of the playoffs, just like LeBron was for the Heat. But Duncan willingly took a back seat to Parker in the Finals, because Parker had the favorable matchup. LeBron is doing the same thing for Wade.

And what about Bird? He didn't win Finals MVP in his first title run, but everyone considers him the best player on that 81 team.

The difference is that Bird and Duncan are much more likable than LeBron and they aren't hated by opinon makers like LeBron is.
For instance people have been going on and on for years about LeBron being terrible in the clutch when he has in fact been one of the best clutch players in the NBA for years.

Getting finals MVP does give a ring more value (if it's a justified finals MVP). But not getting finals MVP should not make a ring a second banana ring for someone who has been the best player on the winning team during the 90-100 games before the finals just because someone else played slightly better over a 4-7 game stretch in a certain matchup situation.
