Can Kobe Become The NBA's All-Time Scoring Leader?

Post#1 » by thizznation » Wed Aug 15, 2012 3:14 pm

Kobe is about 10 thousand points away from Kareem's record at the moment. He has been battling injuries the last few years but if he is playing 80 games he has been scoring 2 thousand points. Not being captain obvious here but thats 5 more seasons to go... That seems a little far fetched that he can pump out 5 more 2k seasons but it's easier to swallow that he gets something along the lines as 3 more 2 thousand point seasons and then 3 to 4 more in the 1500ish range.

I personally see around a 25%/75% chance that he pulls it off.

If he wins 7 championships, even without the Scoring record, he'll hang it up right there. But if he doesn't he'll stay around to get the record.

He can get the record if he wants it, it's not a crazy idea

Yeah, Kobe's eyes have ALWAYS been on Jordan.
So, his most coveted accolade is definitely the 6th (and then the 7th :D ) Championship ring.

He definitely has the chance with this kind of reinforced squad... IF he tops Jordan in 2 or 3 years, I don't think he continues for another 3 or 4 years just to catch KAJ.
But who knows... Kobe loves to grab even All-Star MVP awards and such...

No. Minutes matter more than age and 51 thousand is 38/39 yr old level. I don't think he gets close

Not if he wants the chance for another title or two.

I agree with above that he wants Jordan and that is his realistic shot. His efficiency is dropping season after season and I am hoping this year so will his fga's. Hopefully with this season you also see his mpg decrease and I hope we see an increase defensively from him.

I mean in all honesty, he is really the second (KG) to have come into the league at such a young age and perform at a high level for so long so I am not really sold on the minutes played theory. He still has these minutes in a younger body and KG has proved still to deliver at a high level at a few years older.

Teammates to me dictate why this will not be reached now. He doesn't need or should be taking more than 20 fga's per game now.

If he plays 3 more years, I can see him adding about 5,000 more points. Which would put him at almost 35,000. The thing is, I dont think he would play much longer than that. Maybe 2 years at most. In those 2 years he would need 4,000 more points which I dont think would happen.

So if he plays 3 more years then I'd say 3rd place at around 35,000. If he plays 5 years then possibly 2nd place.

Kobe has played more minutes than KG, so I don't know if he's good evidence that Kobe will hold up. Kobe doesn't just have a lot of minutes, he's one more regular MP season away from being top 5 of all time, ahead of guys like Stockton, Wilt, Miller, etc. Jason Kidd has only played about half a season more than Kobe. Kobe has already passed Shaq. He's already a massive outlier by being this productive this long, for him to keep it up for multiple seasons more will require him being a super-outlier

No agreed but everyone else has been older than Kobe in comparison during the same time. Regardless he still has a younger body then his counterparts so he really is an outlier here.
