So they were judged by someone watching the game and recording how many shots they got a hand on. How are they recorded now?

@coastalmarker99

I have compiled shot block data for 137 of Wilt's games, 1959-1973. (Note that 75 of the games (45%) are post Wilt's 11/9/69 knee surgery, so this is likely an underestimate of his true totals and average BPG.)

Wilt averaged 8.75 blocks per game during these 137 contests, with a high of 23 against the Suns on 12/25/68. I have it in Excel if anyone is interested.

What data do you have, overall, and what does it tell us?

Wilt is arguably the greatest 7 foot defensive center in NBA history. The late, great Harvey Pollack did keep track of blocked shots when Wilt played for the Warriors/76ers, and despite the Sixers Management in the '80s later discarding a good number of those statistics, he estimated that the Big Dipper averaged 8 -11 blocks a game during his prime years. In Chamberlain's last 2 seasons with the 76ers and his 5 years with Lakers, sportswriters (e.g., UPI, AP, Sixer/Laker beat writers) were being more diligent about keeping track of blocked shots. This was especially the case in the playoffs. Examples include...

1967 PLAYOFFS 21.7 PTS 29.1 REBS 9.0 ASTS 9.2 BLKS
1968 PLAYOFFS 23.7 PTS 24.7 REBS 6.5 ASTS 9.7 BLKS

I know that for the 1966-1967 and 1967-1968 seasons that there is a ton of Wilt footage sitting around; for example, I personally know the '68 Sixers televised every (road) game locally on WPHL-TV channel 17, and WFIL-TV did the exact same thing for the 1966-1967 Sixers.

And I also know that the Nba and Abc televised the entire 1969 finals series along with the 1970 finals and 1972 finals and finally the 1973 finals to go along with the 1972 and 1971 Wcf.

And finally, I must inform you the Nba archives, and KTLA archives have a ton of footage of Wilt as a Laker from 1968 to 1973 there at the very least is two seasons and a half worth's of games that they have of Wilt as a Laker in the regular season and playoffs as well.

Fantastic work, per your usual!! Thank you!!

Do you have an overall total/summary of number of games and blocks per game (for all games you've surveyed for Wilt)?

How do I access the NBA Archives?

The Nba archives are very protective of Wilt footage as to get access to it you need Wilt's family's permission which is very hard to get as getting even into contact with them is ridiculously difficult as mind you I have tried to do so myself so that I and 70's fan along with WCA can all gain full access to the library of Wilt games that the Nba archives has in its possession.

It must be also noted that the amount of Wilt footage that is just laying around in multiple archives is just ridiculous

I personally know for a fact that footage of Wilt's first press conference with the Harlem Globetrotters where they announced that he had signed with the Globetrotters in a famous New York restaurant exists and they the Globetrotters afterwards made him put on their uniform much to the delight of the press that had packed out the restaurant. And the fun fact about that night is they personally give Wilt a 10000 signing bonus in cash that night which he then gave to Vince Miller his best friend to hold.

I also know that at the very least that footage of Wilt exists of him playing with the Globetrotters past 1959 as Wilt during his entire career after his season would end would regularly join up with the travelling Globetrotters and play with them in Europe and in places like Milan.

Please see notes in red. Keep in mind this was just an initial search about Wilt through our database coastalmarker.

10/24/1959 Warriors vs Knicks-Wilt's debut game. Have game in our database

11-7-1959 Warriors vs Celtics -Wilt's first game against Russell in the Boston garden. Have game in our database.

11/24/1960 Warriors vs Celtics – 55 rebound game against Bill Russell (and possibly 8 blocked shots) don’t have game in our database.

11/19/1961 Warriors vs Packers – Wilt's first game against rookie Bellamy, 51 points and blocks Bellamy's first 8 or 9 shots in the paint. Have game in database
1/13/1962 Warriors vs Packers – 73 points 36 rebounds against Walt Bellamy. We have footage of Wilt playing the Packers this game in our database
3/22/1962 Warriors vs Nationals – 56 points with possibly a dozen blocks, possibly the highest scoring 50 point triple-double in NBA history and playoff history. 6 playoff records were broken this game. Don’t have game in our database

11/25/1966 – I think this is the Wilt dislocating Gus Johnson's shoulder game- have game in our database

Every single game possible from the 1967 playoff run would be something I desire because he AVERAGED a triple-double in the entire series vs Cincinnati, THEN averaged a triple-double the entire series against Boston!. He then matched up with prime Nate Thurmond and had a possible quadruple-double against him. He also had a possible quadruple-double against Russell that series prior. The games I'm interested are below:
Game from 67 playoffs:
Game 4 ECF 4/09/67: 0000164676, 0000407854 just the 2nd half
Game 1 NBA Finals 4/14/67: 0000506119 broll from game1 but they’re celebrating on the court so it might feature stuff from them clinching the title in game 6.

3/21/1967 Sixers vs Cincinnati game 1- 41 points scored by Wilt that game to go along with his 22 rebounds and 5 assists plus his 9 blocked shots. We have that game in our database.
3/21/1967 Sixers vs Cincinnati game 2- 37 points scored by Wilt that game to go along with his 27 rebounds and and 11 assists plus his 6 blocked shots. We have that game in our database.

4/16/1967 Sixers vs Warriors game 2 – possible quadruple-double (10p, 10a, 38 reb, 10blk) vs Nate Thurmond we have that game in our database.
4/24/1967 Sixers vs Warriors game 6 – Wilt clinching the Finals game we have that game in our database
2/2/1968 Sixers vs Pistons – 20/20/20 game the only official one in NBA history Don’t have that game in our database

3/18/1968 vs Lakers – 53 points 24 reb 14a, just a dominating game against the Lakers his highest "official" triple-double (though unofficially his 56 point game with blocks I listed earlier in his career) Don’t have that in our database but we do have footage of Wilt as a 76er and Warrior in our database vs the Lakers in other games.

12/25/1968 Lakers vs Suns – 23 blocked shots against the suns on National television we have footage of Wilt playing against the Suns from this game in our database)

Holly sh*t!!! It seems that they have hundreds of games in their database. Do you really need family's permission to get even samples of this footage?

12/25/1968 Lakers vs Suns – 23 blocked shots against the suns on National television we have footage of Wilt playing against the Suns from this game in our database)
1/26/1969 Lakers vs Royals – 60 points – Wilt's 2nd to last 60 point effort probably to silence critics about his scoring ability we have this game in our database
* 2/09/1969 Lakers vs Suns – 66 points – Wilt's last 60 point effort again probably to silence critics we have this game in our database
5/06/1970 Lakers vs Knicks – 45 points 27 rebounds Wilt's highest Finals scoring game we have this game in our database.

Holly sh*t!!! It seems that they have hundreds of games in their database. Do you really need family's permission to get even samples of this footage?

The Nba archives have such a massive list of Wilt games in their possession that they gave me that it would blow you and other people like Wca minds out and mind you I have even more games of WIlt that the database has on my list.

Hi coastal

Sorry for the delay in my response to you but I have I’ve been asked my superiors to find out if you have had any contact/approval from Wilt’s family regarding this footage.

I am just confused as to why I need Wilt's family permission as I thought if it's an NBA film the NBA has all the rights to it

Hi Coastal,

While the NBA controls the rights to all footage of Wilt we do follow the families wishes in circumstances such as this.
Feel free to contact me again if anything changes regarding Wilt's family

11/16/1962 Warriors vs Knicks – 73 points – Have game in our database

11/25/1966 – I think this is the Wilt dislocating Gus Johnson's shoulder game- have game in our database
1/20/1967 – Sixers vs Lakers – Wilt shoots 15 for 15 from the field en route to a then-record 32 consecutive field goals (spanning 4 games) - have game in our database
2/24/1967 Sixers vs Bullets – Wilt shoots 18 for 18 from the field in the middle of what will eventually set a new NBA record 35 consecutive field goal streak (spanning 4 games) of most shots ever taken without a miss beating his own prior record of 32 set earlier in the season - we have that game in our database

Have you tried contacting someone from Wilt's memorial fund?

It seems that one of his sisters are among directors.

Good morning everyone!

For numerous reasons, I didn't necessarily want to post this now;
however, based upon the latest posts, perhaps this may be as good a time as any for me to present the following:

In the 100 point game, Wilt DID record a triple-double

About 2 years ago, there was a youtube subscriber who posted a message on a Wilt video whose father or grandfather attended the Hershey game on that historic night; I inquired to the subscriber if he recalled Wilt's block total that game, and he said:

"He stopped counting at 12 because of all the fouling both teams were doing in the 4th quarter"(Or something like that)

I also need to pass along the following as well:

For now we know that in at least Wilt's last 5 60 point games, he unofficially recorded triple-doubles:

Feb. '69 game vs Phoenix: 10 blocks
Jan. '69 game vs Cincy: close to a dozen blocks

Dec. '67 game at Chicago: 14 blocks
Mar. '66 game vs SFW: 16 blocks
Feb. '66 game vs LAL: 16 blocks

In Wilt's 1st 60 point game, March of '61 vs Knicks,
I know for certain he unofficially recorded a triple-double:

Philadelphia Inquirer said he "knocked out numerous shots"

Concerning the 6 70pt games Wilt posted, for now I will merely state this:

Except for the 100pt game, I don't yet know Wilt's blocks for 78pt Laker game or the 73pt Chicago game,
but I'd most certainly be willing to bet some heavy cash that he ABSOLUTELY had double-figure blocks,
and furthermore, in the 73pt game, I'd also be willing to up the ante and say his block total was at least 25, if not more,
upon careful box score analysis.

Regarding the 3 62-63 70pt games, I don't know yet if there's complete footage of those games yet,
and I'm not yet certain of Wilt's blocks in these games either, perhaps I'm at least partially wrong on this,
maybe because they lost 2 of the games, but I also wouldn't be shocked to discover Wilt had double figure
blocks in the 72pt Laker game loss, as well as the 70pt Syracuse March game, a 15 point San Francisco loss.

By any measure, hopefully this answers some particularly important questions that many had, or may still have, in some regards.

Blessings...

Just came upon the following article last night and felt the need to post this:

Los Angeles Evening Citizen News
Jan. 25, 1964

Quoted by Laker coach Fred Schaus

"I've never seen a man block more shots than Wilt did tonight"

I couldn't find a paper which posted Wilt's block total,
however, upon studying the game's box score
I'm convinced it was at least 15, maybe closer to 20.

Remember, Schaus did see Wiley block 20 shots in 23 minutes his rookie season in New York vs Knicks,
so perhaps maybe he forgot about that game when he was asked about Wilt that evening,
but even then, it wouldn't shock me if Wilt's block total was close to 20(even though Lakers won by 18).

What data do you have, overall, and what does it tell us?

ty 4191Can you please tell me your highest Wilt block totals, as well as the sources?

The highest I found was 11/25/68 and 12/25/68 with 23 blocks in each game. I searched hundreds of different newspapers using newspapers.com.

I was going to add that I already found your complete game post via another chat forum,
which, by the way, I do appreciate posting.

I scanned through to determine whether or not there were any block totals that I wasn't aware of yet,
but I couldn't locate any. Either way though, no hard feelings whatsoever.

It appears to me that at this point, coastalmarker99, who, as you probably know, has done, for me anyway, a phenomenal job in posting block totals that I know for certain, at this point, I cannot locate anywhere else. He's a been a true godsend for someone like myself, and hopefully for you as well.

The newspaperarchive.com site you're referencing, I still research that occasionally now,
but it's becoming more & more difficult to find anything new, however, I am still able to procure new gems from time to time.

(As an aside, if you're interested, you may want to search the following site for additional data:

www.geneologybank.com

I found numerous Bill Russell block totals from the Boston papers, as well as some of Wilt's, a Nate Thurmond,
& Elvin Hayes 20 block game, as well.
I think I started seriously accessing it almost 2 years ago. I knew about it beforehand from someone from the Omaha library,
but had extreme difficulty navigating through it initially. Now, or at least in nearly the last 2 years, it's become 2nd nature to me.)

I'd previously seen this video, however, I just listened to it earlier tonight and noticed something that I hadn't previously:

If you listen carefully to Sonny Hill at around the 35:30 portion, you'll hear him state the following:

"Wilt & Bill Russell averaged 10-12 blocks per game in their prime"(Close enough anyway)

Even before I'd uncovered the data posted on here & elsewhere, I was still convinced this was true.

Smfh, my sincerest apologizes to everyone, not to go off on a tangent anymore than necessary,
I perfectly understand this forum is primarily(although not exclusively)about Wilt & Russ's shot-blocking,
however, I also feel the need to post the following, since I just encountered it:

https://www.nba.com/news/nba-record-five-players-log-triple-doubles-on-same-day

First of all, what they're not telling you is that, at least for official triple-doubles,
the assist criteria is much more liberal today.

Point being:

On March 18, 1973, by today's assist interpretation there were 6 players who officially recorded a triple-double

Connie Hawkins 11pts 11reb 10ast
Dave Cowens 12pts 13reb 11ast
Herm Gilliam 19pts 10reb 10ast
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 22pts 20reb 10ast
Spencer Haywood 38pts 18reb 10ast
Wilt Chamberlain 16pts 15ast 10ast(15 if you also factor in Wilt thought he was robbed of 4 assists per game as Laker)

This is in no way intending to disrespect and/or diminish all the players who posted just 5 triple-doubles the other day.
But it's also meant to highlight the unfortunate fact that most of the media won't begin to tell you what folks like us on this chat forum will have no hesitation whatsoever telling you.

Lastly:

We at least know for certain now that Russell & Chamberlain, by today's assist criteria, posted quadruple-doubles on:

March 19, 1966

Russell at New York 10pts 27reb 10ast 30blk(NY Post: Knicks coach Dick McGuire thought Russ blocked 30)
Wilt vs Cincinnati 39pts 28reb 15ast 10blk(from this chat forum)

They also might've done likewise on the following dates:

Feb. 7, 1967

Russell vs Cincy 24pts 24reb 11ast, Cincy Post "thrilled the crowd with his shot-blocking"
Wilt vs San Francisco 15pts 26reb 11ast Phi. Daily News "blocking at least a dozen shots"

Feb. 14, 1968

Wilt at Seattle 35pts 24reb 19ast 12blk(from this chat forum)
Russell vs Detroit(at NYC) 13pts 23reb 13ast(there's a complete box score of this game which I've studied & I have no doubt he had double-figure blocks; there's NY paper that I'll probably check soon to see if his blocks were reported there,
but even then, it would be wonderful if there's a complete copy of this game to view.

In closing, the 3 dates I've mentioned above might not be the only ones where Russ & Wilt recorded quadruple-doubles on,
but they're the first 3 that come to mind for me.

Blessings..
