So, even if we are not done yet with the point guard top ten list, to be ready to keep it going and start with this list when we are done with the PGs, we should start listing candidates for the Shooting guards list.

Not much to say, just start throwing out candidates, and, most important, we should settle the position for possible candidates who are between SG/SF

From the eye test, I will go with Sidney Moncrief. Sid was the best shutdown man defender I've ever seen, adept at closing out on shooters, strong enough to deal with post up wings, and quick enough to stay with even the jet PGs. He didn't play the passing lanes like some of the other great wings but, despite his offensive responsibilities as the leading scorer on some very good Bucks teams, he was relentless defensively, not coasting or using defense to rest. During his prime, he led a Bucks team with mediocre defensive bigs to the best defense in the league. The Bucks used a center by committee with Bob Lanier or Paul Mokeski as the offensive platoon and Harvey Catchings or Alton Lister as the defensive platoon and yet, in that 5 year stretch, were the best defense twice and the 2nd best twice for Don Nelson, one of the first open advocates of small ball.

Moncrief's healthy prime was short, only about 5 years, and occasional players like Michael Jordan could step up and play Moncrief level man defense for stretches but even peak Jordan failed to maintain the consistent relentless aggression Moncrief exhibited.

We should decide if andre roberson is a SG or a SF. If it was up to me, I'd be confortable to put him at SF. His offensive game is certainly more sf than sg (in fact, he would have more success on the offensive end if he played like a pf, more than a sg) his size is the one of a sf, on defense he guards both sgs and sgs, in general he guards the 6'5" to 6'8" players, harden and klay to lebron, kawhi, melo etc, actually he is one of the best suited players to guard KD. So even the shooting guards that he guards, are more the tall ones than the avery bradley, bradley beal, jj redick, lou williams etc. I would say he's more used to guard the range from "almost 3 to almost 4" than the small guards. In my opinion he is a SG.

I don't remember if somebody mentioned Robert Covington in the original thread. Apart from the fact that I would not put him on the list at this point, he's clearly a SF.

Very important: Jimmy Butler SG or SF? Shane Battier SF, no?

IMO Bowen, hondo, iggy are SF.

Is Havlicek being considered a SG or SF? Bball Ref lists him as a SG in 4 seasons and a SF in 12 seasons.

Eh, the most important thing to do here is to decide the position of those players. In my opinion we should consider him as a SF

I don't disagree with any mentions above based on their defensive chops, but the bolded ones I may have a hard time classifying as SG's.
Bruce Bowen in particular was pretty consistently a SF in the Spurs line-up (bbref's play-by-play data has him 81% at SF from '01 thru end of career, vs only 13% SG).
Hondo is listed (on bbref) as SF in 12 of his 16 seasons; which is fitting when you think about those rosters--->he was frequently starting/playing next to the Jones's or maybe one Jones and Larry Siegfried (or maybe Ramsey)......among those casts, he's the pretty clear SF.
And bbref's play-by-play data has 65% of Iggy's career played at SF (just 32% at SG).

What about butler and thabo?

Bowen and Battier I'm 100% of the opinion they should be SF's.
I feel fairly strongly that Havlicek and Iguodala should be SF's.
Jerry Sloan I feel pretty strongly should be a SG.
Thabo probably a SG, too, though close.
Jimmy Butler, I really don't have a strong opinion on. Off-hand, I would maybe have leaned marginally toward SF, but then I went and looked at bbref, and it has him as 53% SG/45% SF/2% PF over his full career (59/40/2 from '14-'18). So maybe SG is the better designation????

Havlicek is definitely an SF imo. Same with Bowen and Battier; I'm pretty confident that all those guys are 3s. Thabo I don't have an opinion on, although with the amount of time he spent at PF last year, I might lean towards SF.

Butler I don't have a super strong opinion on, but I think he's an SG. He became a star playing SG, and he played SG last year next to Wiggins who I think is also a natural SG.

Roberson I think should be an SG, although I won't die on that hill either. BBallRef has him split pretty evenly, but he's consistently listed as an SG in starting lineups, and that's enough for me - I don't think it matters that he can't shoot or that he can switch up; you can say the same things about Tony Allen, and he's for sure an SG.

My strongest opinion on positions, though: Michael Cooper is 100% an SG. He could play 1 through 3, but he was a natural 2 who backed up Byron Scott. BBallRef never shows him as any other position.

I say SG for Thabo, his best years were beside Durant and I believe was playing SG in Chicago as well

Majerle made some all defense teams. Stephen Jackson good enough to get on the candidates list?
