At what position would you list Jimmy Butler, Andre Roberson, Sefolosha, Dan Majerle

Hi guys, as some of you may have noticed, we are running a project about the best players in each position. Before moving on with every new position, we make a list of candidates. So, an important thing to do, is to decide the position of those players who are between two spots. Remember, that the list is about the best defenders among the players who played a certain position, not the best players at defending that position. So, we would need help with those players. You can select 4 options
By the way, you could partecipate in the project

I think our fallback for PGs was what they were primarily listed at in B-R.com. This gives an uninvolved outsider take and avoids people claiming gamesmanship. So, for example, they list Butler at SG in 5 of his 7 seasons and 3 of his 4 prime seasons so I would list him as a SG. In fact, B-R.com lists all 4 as SGs in terms of seasons. If someone wants to give us the cite for more granular data, that would be fine too as long as it is clear before we start.

I’d call Butler a 2, Andre a 3 and Thabo a 4. Unless you’re talking about prime versions, in which case Thabo is a 3.
As far as Majerle, I wasn’t watching the league day-to-day be\ack in the 90s so I’m not really qualified here.

I would go Butler - SG, Thabo - SG, Majerle - SG, Iguodala - SF, a lot of its based on who they were playing with in their best seasons honestly

He's talking about their entire careers: which position
best identifies them if looking at their
entire careers.

Butler is seeming more of a SG, since I started looking into it (close, though).
I tend to think of Thunder Dan as more of a SG, too.
I don't really have an opinion on Roberson or Sefolosha; I could go either way on them.

Butler's been SG in Minnesota but I still feel like he's a SF. I'd call Majerle and Thabo 2s, and Roberson's whatever. I can't even put him anywhere, he was a PF in college.

Dennis Johnson and probably McMillan spent the majority of their careers guarding positions other than point guard but we think of them as point guards.
These 4 guards in this thread are all big off guards but they played off guard and we think of them as off guards. They are on the big side of normal for off guards.
Thunder Dan made All Defensive teams but I have doubts about whether he really should have been on all defensive teams.

Butler’s the only one that’s really close IMO. Has played more minutes and more majority seasons at SG, but the minutes are real close and he’s also 6’8” and arguably a more natural fit at SF. Thabo played SG his whole career until he hit his 30s. Roberson played 61%+ of his minutes at SG in 4/5 seasons. Majerle doesn’t have the PBP data until his last 2 years because he’s further back, but I still always think of him as a SG.

We're not talking about any specific version, we're talking about over their whole careers since this is an all-time ranking. So Thabo is definitely either a 2 or a 3 on balance.

PG is the exception to the rule that your position is based on your defensive assignment.

Point guard has an offensive role. People would cringe at not calling Magic a point guard just because he did not defend point guards.
I guess point off guard would sound even stranger than point forward.

Well, as I think the positions should be small guard (1), combo guard (2), wing (3), combo forward (4), post (5) . . . . I would have no problem calling Magic a three. Heck, even with our definitions, he started his career at off guard and played 2 until they traded Norm Nixon for Byron Scott.

Magic was a point wing. He could have been a point combo forward because he could defend power forwards but I thought his natural defensive position was small forward. The way I remember it Byron Scott and Cooper defended point guards but Cooper defended the best player 1s, 2s and 3s. Worthy usually defended small forwards. That left Magic mostly defending off guards but sometimes defending small forwards.
