The Luka Doncic Thread - 2018-19

Post#1 » by Gibson22 » Thu Oct 18, 2018 8:28 pm

Considering how much following has he had in the past 2 years on real gm forum, and the fact that he's in the nba and a mod decided to shut down his thread on the draft board, I tought about opening his thread here.
I don't if there are rules regarding this, since those threads are normally for elite players like harden, giannis, lebron, davis etc.

He looks super comfortable out there. I'm impressed, Carlisle needs to play him more minutes though (it's been one though lmao).
Regardless, excited to see how he develops and for the Mavs.

I think he really felt the pressure yesterday. That's not how he shoots

Needs to build up his body. Bad shooting night because he wasn't as open as he's accustomed to. Doncic should be ok.

I'll confess, despite the avalanche of press he's gotten in the last two years, I was one of the doubters . Obviously, he didn't have a great game Wednesday, but he looks pretty NBA ready. Despite not being a great athlete, he gets around people and can really see the floor.

He looks fine. The best since Lebron was crazy. The lock for ROY was too. He has a great game. At worst he's Hedo. At best he's anything he wants.

Luka just had a long rest and obviously used it.
He'll be back in peak Euroleague shape in a few months and then he'll keep improving physically as he's still a youngster.

His athleticism is also fine for his age, not exceptional but above average.
That will become evident in 2-4 years when he enters his physical prime.

Is it because he's a Euro that nobody is calling him Larry Bird?

He looks fast in the open court. Half court burst still isn’t quite there but he’s still able to get minimal separation with his strength and craftiness. And if he shoots like tonight he’s gonna be excellent.

It’s amazing to me he can keep up with NBA players while looking as chubby as he does so nowhere to go but up from here.

Most of the time I wish he stopped attempting those fadeaway stepback 3 pointers, sometimes I wish he attempted them more often. I don't know if he'll be able to convert on those shots more consistently, but if he ever does, goodness gracious watch out NBA.

Many people have compared his style and profile to Bird.

May be it's too early, but it looks like he is ROTY so far! I hope he will only get better from now!

People said that not being in "NBA shape" would be a problem, but:

-he's 9th in the league in "miles run per game"
-he's more often than not shooting better in the second half. Yesterday again, he started 1/6 and ended up 8/14.
-He averaged 27.5pts in the 2 back to back he had.

He does actually look like he could lose 10 pounds easily, but his motor is already great.

I'm impressed so far. Too many TOs, but a couple of them are actually from missed alley-hoop or good passes that his teammates didn't expect. People were talking about him maybe being a 20-5-5 guy in his prime, but that's what he is already as a rookie.

Not the best choice of jersey colors in yesterday's game.

Yeah, don't know what was weirder, both teams having similar colored jersey's or that someone on twitter called him a "white Nowitzki" ... I'm still trying to process both :o

Not worried about his advanced stats, looks like only thing wrong with them is the TOVs, he's even .60 TS% so far unlike a lot of high volume rookies who went on to be superstars

I knew his stats in Europe were too good that 20, 5, 5 or Hayward level player was his floor. I mean he was putting up 24.7 pts, 7.5 reb, 6.6 ast per 36 in Euroleague as a teenager. Question is how close he is to his ceiling but I see no reason why he can't put up those Euroleague stats or better in his NBA prime. He has done everything he needs to so far to potentially be one of the best players of all time. His athleticism is underrated in my opinion and his strength will be great. Is his physical tools worse than Harden's? I look for it to be like Lebron and Durant who had less advanced stats friendly 20ppg seasons as a rookie but then quickly became superstars in 2nd/3rd year

Is there anything more stupid than the advance stats? If we just stop watching games and just look at all those extra %%%, then anyone can become a superstar. To me it just means that people have stupid fights over the internet about their favorite players without actually looking at the whole picture. I don't need to go through 10 pages of advance stats to see who is more capable of carrying his team, or who is doing what in clutch time, or even who is more valuable to his team. But anyway.. just my opinion.

Yeah, I've only seen highlights, but it looks like he gets those Steve Nash/Magic Johnson turnovers where it's just his teammates not expecting the ball to be there because when playing with normal playmakers with normal vision, it never is. That will change as teammates get accustomed to him, and also as he learns that some teammates do not learn from mistakes. Natural order of things.

Also, very interesting with the miles run per game. Not saying he can't get in better NBA shape, but clearly it's no major issue currently.

BTW, I expect that list to have rookies occupying 15 of the first 20 spots. Rookies have the most energy and don't know how to play yet; they should all be running around like headless chickens trying to compensate.

No other rookies. He's now 11th, but the 10 guys ahead of him are all smaller than him. Jrue Holiday, DeRozan, Lavine, Butler are in the top 5. Justin Holiday is 6th, I guess the Holiday brothers like to run. :)

This is a stat per game though. Most rookies don't play enough minutes to be up there.
