Repeating my vote for Don Chaney. Made the all-defensive second team five teams. Excellent man-defender who proudly wore the label of being a "lockdown" defender, although most fans today only remember him as the answer to a trivia question ("who is the only player to play with both Bill Russell and Larry Bird?").

What kind of player was he? Consider that when he left the Celtics, the fans gave him a huge man-sized trophy, which totally surprised him. Why? According to a Boston sports writer, the fans gave it to him because Chaney exemplified the "blood and guts" of sports - no excuses, no crying towels, and definitely no flopping. He was the epitome of a tough, hard-nosed defender.

Hmmm, I should have voted. I don't think Danny Green belongs on this list.

I'll vote Wade or Kobe, whoever has more votes, or Christie.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

Thabo Sefolosha, Don Chaney, Jimmy Butler, or Doug Christie. I'm pretty sure I'm going to support one of them, but I really don't know who. I'll "decide" in the next two days, though I cannot guarantee that my "decision" won't just be some kind of randomizing model. For that matter, Dwyane Wade doesn't seem like a bad candidate either.

Anyway, vote Jimmy Butler

Come on guys. He's quite good.

Not to derail, but did either of you thoroughly read the arguments put forth for him in the last TWO threads? That'd be the place to start, and feel free to provide any appropriate counter-points there. But there was plenty of substantiating evidence (both of the statistical sort, as well as scouting).

I think of Danny Green as nothing more than a solid defender.

In the top ten, I want consistently great defenders. I think that people are judging off of small pools of games. But I will have a look.

Don Chaney was a consistently outstanding defender. Excellent size, strong, tough to post, very good in the passing lanes, excellent man defender. Good enough that they often used him to cover the opponent's best wing instead of Havlicek on those 70s Boston teams. My vote for #10.

Still have to go with Thabo Sefolosha. Think he has the best case for both peak and cumulative value statistically.

Vote for Don Chaney. We don't have many on/off stats for him, but on film I can barely find a flaw except that he wasn't always elite at contesting shots. He has maybe the best hands and timing for steals I've ever witnessed, though. Shadowed the opponent's best man, has the accolades and the reputation, plus the very few stats we do have (PIPM, WOWYR) love him even as a mediocre offensive player.

I went into more detail about this in threads 8 and 9, but game-to-game, possession-to-possession consistency was a big part of why I voted for Green over Butler.

Thabo has always been a blah player but defense is hard to judge and sometimes bias based on lack of offensive talent get in the way. The +/- data supports him as one of the best SG defenders so I'll go with him. Vote Thabo Sefolosha

With Wade, Kobe it's the same argument against Lebron, at their peak they're worth considering on this list but it's for like 2 or 3 years. Otherwise it's a combination of too young, too old, carrying too big of a load in those 06 Kobe/09 Wade one man army seasons, or in Wade's case too injured.

Don Chaney and Jimmy Butler are the two guys that I feel that belong to the list, I would put them and put away danny green but certainly enough evidence was presented in the last thread to justify a vote for him.
I'm voting for Jimmy B just because I'm sure that if this was 2020 I would have voted him way higher, and I think he would go a bit higher

I was thinking of voting for Thabo but since I'm more of a peak guy I'm going with Christie.

I think Christie was the best defensive guard in the league for a solid two years - to put things in perspective, Danny Green just got in and he has never been the best defensive guard...maybe never even second best.

Christie is just a step above everyone when he was peaking, and his other seasons are not really chop liver either.

My vote goes to Christie

Danny Green has been an incredible defender for the Raptors this year. His transition D is probably the best I have ever seen. He earned it.

I vote Thabo here. Always have enjoyed his game a lot. Sort of felt like he was under utilized most of his career but he had some limits offensively.

No Wade :o . This is absouletly why I couldn't give myself to these votings :banghead: .

When Sloan sitted at 7, people criticize Green's spot? Green is extremely well-rounded defensive player to give everything to you, he's SG version of Draymond. Btw, I really don't get how Sloan is up there :/ .

What is your problem with Sloan? Take a look at the #7 thread and post your critiques there so we can see them. We all want to know more about these players and defense is much tougher to judge for those who didn't see a player often.

Six all-defensive teams (four first-team), great steal totals and impact stats from the years we have, stands out on film, 2 all-star selections that he got basically just on his defensive merits...

I vote once again for Wade even though it seems he won't enter in the list.

In the last thread I wrote this about him.
I just feel a bit more safe to vote Wade because of his ability as an additional "rim protector", who consistently posted block rates among the best ever for a guard. The majority of those blocks and a lot of his value as a defender came from help defense, a fundamental in which he particularly excelled. Nevertheless, in his prime, he was also a good man-to-man defender, using his quickness and explosiveness to prevent drives. Despite being slightly undersized for a SG, he was also decent at altering opponents' shots. He beats Christie and Green by a nose and right now I really don't know who I will support between them for the last spot.

Then cecilthesheep rightly pointed out that Green was even better at blocking shots as shown by BLK%. I should have checked that point but I was sure that Wade had a clear advantage over anyone. This is probably another example of a perception bias we all tend to have for flashy players and superstars. I also had in mind the highlights of Wade's absurd blocks whereas nobody probably has ever done anything similar for Green. Anyway, now Green is in so now Wade really is the best in BLK% among the remaining players.

I think Christie deserves to be in as much as Wade an if he is neck and neck for this spot I might change the vote to favor him if it's possible and if Wade is too far behind the leader, but for now I stick with flash.
