Which duo would you rather build a new team around?

Kobe/Malone. I'll take the offense over the defense.

Kobe & Malone. I think the talent is higher, the timelines align perfectly & I can find the missing stuff easier.

Pippen is nowhere close to these other guys.

The gap on Pippen/Malone isn't much bigger than the gap on Duncan/Kobe. Most smart people have Malone at 20 and Pippen at least 30, that's not a huge gap.

Duncan I've seen as top 3 and Kobe I've seen outside the top 10. Gap is pretty much equal overall.

Malone is also always choking in the playoffs and the mailman didn't deliver in big moments, Stockton was the clutch one of the two. I got the greatest wing-big defensive duo you can possibly put together in Duncan/Pippen as long as they are surrounded by shooters.

Yeah, put me on the Pippen/Duncan side too. Much better fit and defense and you’ve still got a solid first and second option on offense.

Kobe and Malone easily. Their longevity is amazing. You basically got 14+ years of superstar play between the both of them

This one is actually really close.

Duncan and Pippen would be GOAT level on defense, however they lack a killer instinct offensively (in this comparison)

On the other hand, Kobe and Malone are both go-too scorers who can close out games. Defensively they’re both great defenders but they don’t provide the suffocating team, rotational and rim protection defence like the other two.

I’ll go with Duncan and Pippen by a slim margin.

I agree with your logic, except that if we’re filling out the rest of the roster around either pair, it would be easier to complete the team around Kobe/Malone(judging by your/our logic). Realistically, in any era, you could scoop up some 3 and D guys and/or a big that could rebound and protect the rim at a high level — guys like that are a dime a dozen.

Finding a player with a killer instinct or a dynamic, high-level perimeter player whose game translates to big moments and the playoffs is likely much harder to find.
