following on really dumb drama in the Olympics

now Djokovic (the tennis player) is being criticized for "criticizing" simone biles

basically he was asked in a interview how he deals with pressure and he answered thst he sees pressure as a priviledge and that is important to learn to deal with it

it got headlined by media and online as him attacking simone biles

i hate sports media so damn much

Reporter: "Colbinii, how did racism effect you growing up?"
Colbinii: "Racism didn't effect me growing up. I grew up in a predominantly white area and didn't see it affecting me as I too am white."

Media: "Colbini says racism doesn't effect people."

Journalism has probably declined the most of anything in the social media era, it's much easier to get clicks taking the easy way appealing to people's emotions than trying to do unbiased research. A lot of these writers no doubt have spent 3 weeks grinding on a piece and gotten no views and then put up some low hanging fruit baiting garbage that did 10x more, hard for them to not get discouraged and lose their confidence or any respect for the readers.

The spanish media (very very anti-Djokovic) had a field day with Nole's retirement from the mixed doubles, somehow ignoring that Nadal did exactly the same thing in 2016 lol

lots of people jumped at the chance of making Djokovic the villain to biles hero, people really wanting. a excuse to have righteous anger over sports

even using the same "let his country and teammates down by not competing" arguments they rightfully defended biles from

also the basketballesque "he may win more but never will be as great as nadal/federer cause he doesnt have the class" arguments, when people like someone mpre they will just find a way to **** on the rival lol

reminds me a lot of the mental gymnastics you see in basketball stan culture

EPO is a hell of a drug. I don't fault the athletes for doping, but she is as blatant as it gets lol. She's gonna run the 5000 in a few hours and probably win it, probably could do the same with the 10.000, not the first time she does it either.

Ah well doping or not, it's too bad the video got taken down. It was wild to watch.

5.000 done, two to go.

She's a prodigy but... come on, instanteous recover after already racing today (not a normal quali race either, she had to exert herself), and still has energy for winning the 5000s with a MONSTER kick, and I'm betting she wins the 1500 and 10000 as well no problem (maybe a silver to Gidey).

The Chariots of Fire version is nice

Read on Twitter

It made more sense after seeing her first gold medal run where they didn't have a chance on the final lap

I’d expect just about everyone in that race is on the juice. Sifan is just a different level than the rest.

And hot damn that 400 hurdles.

Most Olympians are probably on the juice, and some that aren't are at least using some questionable substances.

Yawn, only missing Jakob winning the 1.500 m to make this the worst day ever.

EDIT: okay good race from him, did not elbow the guts of anybody or commited a flagrant DQ that then gets overturned or anything like that, I can live with that.

I haven't followed baseball for the last decade, but the answer is almost assuredly no. I doubt he's sniffing Bonds/Ruth air.

Okay so just analytically.

Baseball has a stat called Wins Above Replacement (WAR) that - to my, possibly out of date knowledge - is the go-to one-number metric.

At this point in the season Ohtani was a WAR of 8.0. Second in the MLB is at 5.9, so Ohtani's lead is massive.

To do historical comparison, projecting Ohtani to continue the same for the rest of the season, he ends up with 11.1 WAR.

So here are the best seasons by that metric by guys I'd imagine folks would be curious about:

Babe Ruth (1923) 14.2
Dwight Gooden (1985) 13.3
Roger Clemens (1997) 12.1
Barry Bonds (2001) 11.9
Pedro Martinez (2000) 11.7
Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) 11.5
Mickey Mantle (1957) 11.3
Willie Mays (1965) 11.2
Mike Trout (2012) 10.5
Sammy Sosa (2001) 10.3
Sandy Koufax (1963) 9.9
Albert Pujols (2009) 9.7
Greg Maddux (1995) 9.6
Mark McGwire (1998) 7.5

Here's the list I'm going from if you're curious. You'll note that just a ton of pre-war guys show up that clearly played in a very different era, so my list above isn't the top of the list. The #1 guy is some fellow named Tim Keefe from 1883.

Note, all the top guys (above Ruth) are pitchers from the days of 2-3 man rotations, pitching 60-70 games a season. It makes sense that they'd be so valuable, but is also physically impossible these days (I suppose a knuckleballer might be able to do it).
