Marc as a vet minimum signing (to add a savvy big body to the roster) is one thing. Trading away players and clearing space for him is another.
I say no dice.
I think you're overthinking it a bit. Gasol is just so much more skilled than JaVale. And he's only 3 years older than him. Gasol is 35, which is old by NBA standards, but not ancient. His shooting and passing would be really welcome and his positional awareness on defense more than makes up for less athleticism.
He is a better and (far) smarter player, if he is not cooked. The problem is that he may in fact be cooked.
I would feel far more comfortable if he was being signed at the vet minimum to join McGee.
That way, if he surprises you with what he can still do, you start him and make McGee your third string (insurance) big. If you find out that he is indeed cooked, you stash him at the end of your bench, then utilize his big body and smarts against the likes of Jokic and Embiid.
That is my point. Maybe I am overthinking it a bit, but its a point worth considering.
If Gasol is acquired, hopefully Markieff Morris can be retained and an athletic, defensive big (Biyombo) can be stashed at the end of the bench for the vet minimum.
I would be satisfied with that.
