Best and worst volume-scorers throughout NBA history

This is a follow-up to a recent topic of mine, in which I compared Jokic's scoring this season to that of other all-time great scoring bigs: https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2148453

For the previous exercise, I determined for every NBA season since 1952 how much the biggest volume-scorers stood out relative to their contemporaries based on Points per 100 Possessions (PP100) and TrueShooting Percentage (TS%). Relative PP100 and TS% were determined by calculating how many standard deviations above or below a player was compared to the average of his cohort.

Initially, for each season I only looked at the players that were in the top 10% of PP100, or at least the top 10 players if the top 10% included less than 10 players. This cut-off is now less strict as it's been expanded to include the top 15% of PP100, or at least the top 15 players for every season. I found that having a cut-off 10% sometimes led to notable scorers like Hakeem Olajuwon missing the cut a number of times.

Any thoughts? I think the main downside to doing relative adjustments per season is quite obvious, but I'm not sure how else to do cross-era comparisons then.

For example, I think it's fair to say that Jerry West had a better season scoring-wise in 1970 compared to 1969:

Surprised that Pettit didn't make more lists; I thought his FT draw would push his efficiency up to where his volume would put him on there more than once. Same for Harden in the modern era.

Fun that McAdoo, Barry, and LeBron made both the best and worst lists.

Haven't really looked yet but isn't the "worst" tag somewhat misleading if you're also using a points per X possessions variant as a qualifier.

Maybe one could argue technically the person missing so much that they didn't qualify (but would have if they shot, say 10 TS% higher) isn't a "scorer" (they're a "miss-er"?), still it feels contrary to what I read as the spirit of the exercise to cut people out for missing too much.

Haven't really looked yet but isn't the "worst" tag somewhat misleading if you're also using a points per X possessions variant as a qualifier.

I think a cut-off is definitely needed to exclude limited scorers such as Tyson Chandler or Rudy Gobert if one is only interested in "volume-scorers". In this case, I don't think it's misleading, but perhaps I could have further emphasized "best/worst volume-scorers based on relative PP100 and TS%" or something.

Maybe one could argue technically the person missing so much that they didn't qualify (but would have if they shot, say 10 TS% higher) isn't a "scorer" (they're a "miss-er"?), still it feels contrary to what I read as the spirit of the exercise to cut people out for missing too much.

Fair point, however in that case IMO we would be looking at "volume-shooters" rather than "volume-scorers". Perhaps this is pedantic or overly semantic of me, but this is one of the reasons why I chose PP100 as a qualifier instead of TSA100. Another reason is that using TSA100 rewards relative TS% a bit more. For example 1986 Adrian Dantley jumps ahead of 1989 Michael Jordan in my ranking, see below. That said, the overall results seem quite similar.

Have a look at my reply to Owly, perhaps filtering the top volume-scorers by TSA100 instead of PP100 could be what you are looking for if you want more emphasis on TS%. Indeed for the 2000s, 2010 KD is ranked higher than 2004 T-Mac now:

I haven't looked closely so can't be sure I'm understanding correctly but would guess he's suffering from the comparison with elite scorers. Versus the league he trends under league average, but not heavily so (TS add from rookie to '83 [all RS] he's between +13.4 and -69.1 (league adjusted TS+ between 94 and 101).
'84-'87 is ugly having 3 sub -100 TS Add seasons and a fourth that would have been so had he played 1500 minutes, (TS+ between 93 and 87 in the full-ish seasons). These kill his career TS add (making up -495.2 of his career -731.5). He's a 95 career TS+.

Some small guard negative TS add comps
Iverson has worse prime volume years in terms of TS Add (eyeballing it, similar TS+ range) but doesn't have any super harmful non-prime years, but rather post rule-change started to be a small (and once somewhat large positive). Career -425.9 TS Add. 98 career TS+.

Isiah Thomas, like Williams is passable in RS prime ('83-'89) with 40 to -76.8 TS Add (103 to 96 TS+) but between rookie and '90 like Williams has 3 sub -100 seasons, TS+ in the 95 to 91 range. Career -771.3 TS Add. 96 TS+.

Thomas and Williams both seem to improve efficiency in raw (i.e. before any adjustments) terms in playoff play. Williams more so. Thomas's jump is perhaps illusory (in seasons in which his team made the playoffs, his RS TS% is .522 which his playoff % is slightly below, at .520) Thomas's more real jump otoh was in cutting down turnovers (though more or less holding shooting numbers steady versus playoff opposition is a real terms win).
Williams makes the playoffs every year bar the final partial season and is .506 TS% for RS career minus '87 (.505 including it) and this climbs to.520 in the playoffs.
This isn't adjusted for opponents or making any attempt to smooth out different size samples in different years (not sure how or if one should). TS add and TS+ are unavailable for playoffs for obvious reasons (unbalanced schedules making league norms an unreliable guide).


Drew, if one believes the older gen box-composites, and that he wasn't substantially negative in non-boxscore areas, has a wildly underrated peak (25.1 PER, .216 WS/48 both 2nd in '76).

Kellogg looked like a star when he first came into the league in the mode of a Clarence Weatherspoon with better shooting touch. Strong athletic combo forward with good post skills.

Drew always looked like fool's gold. His nickname was "Cementhead" and he had a ton of physical talent but he was never a player I wanted to have on my team. If I remember right, good to excellent offensive rebounding and foul draw but if he ever got an assist, if was an accident. He would get the ball, take an immediate midrange, or put his head down and charge to the basket counting on his physical ability to go through opponents. Legend has it he also once pulled off his warmups to reveal that he'd forgotten to put his shorts on but I didn't see it.

Elvin Hayes comes out "on top", to no surprise. If we needed an avatar to point to everything you don't want to do with an offense - from a modern perspective - it would probably be Hayes.

I will say that Westbrook is racing to challenge him. On the list I have there - which only includes Top 100 candidates - he ranks 11th, but with the addition of 2020-21 & 2021-22 (so far), he's now risen all the way to 4th with only Fat Lever, Mookie Blaylock, and Hayes left. He's frankly still got a long ways to go, but I have enough confidence in his health to say that probably the only thing that can stop him is an outbreak of common sense within the franchise he's on.

Interesting that of the players you name, Westbrook and Lever are small guards with tremendous rebounding to make up for their shooting but Mookie is a thoroughly modern guard, a point of attack defender who spams 3's at around league high rate during his career. Just wasn't good enough at it.

This is a follow-up to a recent topic of mine, in which I compared Jokic's scoring this season to that of other all-time great scoring bigs: https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2148453

For the previous exercise, I determined for every NBA season since 1952 how much the biggest volume-scorers stood out relative to their contemporaries based on Points per 100 Possessions (PP100) and TrueShooting Percentage (TS%). Relative PP100 and TS% were determined by calculating how many standard deviations above or below a player was compared to the average of his cohort.

Initially, for each season I only looked at the players that were in the top 10% of PP100, or at least the top 10 players if the top 10% included less than 10 players. This cut-off is now less strict as it's been expanded to include the top 15% of PP100, or at least the top 15 players for every season. I found that having a cut-off 10% sometimes led to notable scorers like Hakeem Olajuwon missing the cut a number of times.

Any thoughts? I think the main downside to doing relative adjustments per season is quite obvious, but I'm not sure how else to do cross-era comparisons then.

Elvin Hayes comes out "on top", to no surprise. If we needed an avatar to point to everything you don't want to do with an offense - from a modern perspective - it would probably be Hayes.

I will say that Westbrook is racing to challenge him. On the list I have there - which only includes Top 100 candidates - he ranks 11th, but with the addition of 2020-21 & 2021-22 (so far), he's now risen all the way to 4th with only Fat Lever, Mookie Blaylock, and Hayes left. He's frankly still got a long ways to go, but I have enough confidence in his health to say that probably the only thing that can stop him is an outbreak of common sense within the franchise he's on.

Thanks, I actually considered doing a comparison with TS ADD actually, and is something I might still do in the future! I'm pretty sure similar names will pop-up, but also definitely some differences as TS ADD definitely will value relative TS% more.
