Team outdated vs Team new school

Post#1 » by Dr Positivity » Mon Feb 21, 2022 4:58 pm

Team outdated

Gary Payton
Rip Hamilton
Gerald Wallace
Zach Randolph
Ben Wallace

Team new school

Trae Young
James Harden
Andrew Wiggins
Tobias Harris
Karl-Anthony Towns

Can old school players overcome their comparative lack of spacing to win?

The Glove would give Young/Harden fits and take them out of their game. Wallace would lock down the paint, but have trouble with the perimeter shooting of Towns/Harris. This actually looks like a pretty even matchup. It would go either way in a 7 game series.

A lot depends on the refereeing. If they give Harden the refereeing he got in Houston and Trae defers to him, it would help new school a lot. If they let outdated hold and grab the way they did in their heydays, it would help the older guys a lot. All in prime, I favor the New School guys.

Assuming we're not going with old handchecking rules, and not allowing super physical play, new school, easily.

And that as a child of the 80s/90s!!

If they’re playing a three-point line, then new school easily.

I think this is an interesting idea, but you gave team new school too much of a talent disparity.

At least swap out Rip Hamilton for Kobe Bryant/Dwyane Wade or something, considering the other end is James Harden. KAT is also a better player than Ben Wallace. KAT is a perennial all star. Someone like a Yao Ming would be more equal IMO.

Something like:

Gary Payton
Kobe Bryant
Gerald Wallace
Zach Randolph
Yao Ming

What makes Wiggins a new school?

Team old school plus the refs from 1991 beats team new school. Team old school must dominate the rebounding and I think they can. Randolph has to put some of those offensive boards through the hoop.

Then Team old school has to set a lot of picks and screens for Hamilton who must score.
Team old school is better defensively.

If you give Harden his bogus foul calls then new school wins. Harden can't chase Hamilton all over the floor and he can't stay in front of Payton. So Harden has to guard Gerald Wallace. I guess Wiggins has to chase Hamilton.

To get a super team I need to merge these teams

Best of Gary Payton with best of Trae Young
Best of Rip Hamilton with best of Andrew Wiggins
Best of Gerald Wallace with Best of James Harden
Best of Zach Randolph with best of Tobias Harris
Best of Ben Wallace with best of Karl-Anthony Towns
Plus Best of Kyle Korver and Best of Scottie Pippen
Plus best of Manute Bol
Plus 5 G-leagers

Now that is a team.

Honestly I'd rather have Big Ben for most teams than Yao and in particular against this "Team New School".

In addition to his strength, Ben was very nimble and an excellent P&R defender. Harden and Young are big time switch hunters who would mercilessly target Yao on defense. Wallace, on the other hand, would do about as good a job as any center in history when switched onto those types of guards.

Team outdated doesn't have enough offense and wouldn't be guaranteed to win a championship if they existed as a real team during their era. Team outdated would need a real scoring center like Alonzo or Ewing.

I wanted some sort of 3 and D influence and his personality seems like it fit the team, although maybe I could've picked someone else

I thought about what you were saying, then I remembered bench players creating varied lineups. You may have some ring chasing vets on that bench and a few role players that add toughness to lineups. If you took the bench of seven random NBA champions and added them to that team, would you still feel that way?

Still don't really see it. They seem soft to me. Young/Harden playing together, etc.
