when it comes to guys like curry or lebron or giannis or jokic all their stuff fits the bill, their stats, plus-minus métrics, eye test all point to the same direction

same way with good role players where everythingh says good role player

but who are the guys that have huge discrepancy between how they are seen by the greater public, how good their numbers are, how good their impact métrics say they are, how good they look?

Basically guys who are not seen as superstars but have plus minus métrics of one

guys who are seen as superstars but thst show poorly in impact métrics

guys who have slashlines/boxscore of a star but for whatever reason are not given thw recognition of one yet

and what do you make of them?

Some names that come to mind:

Stockton: he was recognized as an ATG from fans. But by the advanced box score metrics and limited impact stats we have, he had an insanely high peak and played at a super high level for basically as long as anyone in NBA history. If we strictly to go by those numbers I think you basically have to have Stockton as a top 10 player of all time. Yet no one really thinks that.

To me the Jazz success from 1987-1999 relative to the reputations of Stockton, Malone and Sloan is the most confusing item in my basketball lifetime. I still have a tough time coming up with a coherent explanation for it all.

Carmelo: Basic box score stats match his reputation. His advanced box score stats look quite pedestrian relative to his reputation and his on/off stats are quite poor.

Garnett/Robinson: obviously both were MVPs and quite respected in their time but if you are a hardcore believer in on/off stats they played at GOAT levels for years.

Kevin Durant arguably. His plus-minus numbers have not always been as stellar as you might think for someone contending for GOAT scorer to some, along with being a good passer, and having defensive equity.

Trae Young-He has incredible offensive impact numbers, but the defensive numbers are strikingly bad that they drop him from being a top 5-10 guy if his defense was neutral, to someone like a top 20 or lower impact guy over the past few years.

I still believe that CP3 is super underrated. Advanced stats, impact stats, eye tests all point to this guy being Top 20 at worst. Heck just look at his advanced and on/off year after year, you'd think he's a GOAT candidate player.

Jrue Holiday?

I mean, if you outranked AD (3x), Zion (1x) and Giannis (2x) in on court and on/off...that can't be a coincidence.
