Defense only how many guards have a case over Gary Payton?

Kidd, Frazier, Sidney Moncreif, Michael Jordan, Kawhi Leonard, maybe Kobe Bryant, Nate McMillan, Tony Allen, KC Jones, Michael Cooper, Dennis Johnson, Mookie Blaylock, Mo Cheeks, Don Buse. I'd take Payton over any except the 1st five but I can make a case for the others.

Kawhi isn't a guard??? How's about Jrue or Sloan?

In LAC, the 5 main starters were Beverley, Kawhi, George, Harkless, Zubac in 20, Jackson, Kawhi, George, Morris, Zubac in 21. I would call him the 2 in those lineups though they are pretty switchable. In San Antonio, I agree Kawhi was mainly the 3.

Go ahead and make the case for Jrue and/or Sloan yourself, both strong choices.

Payton can be seen as a top 5 defensive guard ever. He was that good, particularly in Seattle.

I thought it was pretty clear Kawhi was the 3 and George the 2.

Frazier, perhaps. West maybe. Jordan. Jrue perhaps.

Alvin Robertson.

Not a huge fan, gambled a lot to get all those steals, created open opportunities at both ends. Not that he wasn't a dangerous defender, just not in Payton's class in my mind.

Joe Dumars was pretty 'pesky'

Payton's teammate and mentor Nate McMillan was pretty good.

Payton isn’t a top defensive point guard let alone guard. His own teammate, Nate McMillan, might be, though.

All time would be MJ, Frazier Dumars, Moncrief. Kidd and Payton would basically be a toss up.

Moncrief, Dumars and MJ are the three that come immediately to mind. Kidd is so damn overrated defensively and this thread is proving it.

But I consider Payton to be a top 5 defensive guard - so there are probably only a handful of dudes you could argue are better.
