Corey Maggette - how would he do today?

Volume scorer, never an All Star, not much of an outside shooter. How would peak Maggette do in today's game? Where would he rank among best SGs in the league?

One dimensional scorer with excellent foul draw but not great range who did nothing else. Not quite good enough to be Demar DeRozan, probably a 6th man type with less minutes and less impact than he did in his actual career because of the current league wide focus on 3 point shooting.

Maggette would actually be better defensively in the modern NBA, but he's a 4 or small-ball 5 who would struggle to rebound well, not a shooting guard.

Maggette is a funny player though. I've long been fascinated by his numbers, some of which are absolutely bonkers. James' Harden's career-high free throws per FG attempt is .592. Maggette had a higher FTR than Harden in 8 different seasons, despite a single-season USG% high that would only rate as the 8th best of Harden's career. Maggette was also quite efficient in terms of TS%, at least relative to his era. He only had below league average TS% in his final two seasons, in which he played 50 combined games. Maggette consistently had a TS% between 3-7 points above league average.

And yet... Corey Maggette only racked up 5 seasons of positive RPM in 14 NBA seasons. There's maybe three players I've ever hated watching as much as I did Maggette. He was a ball-stopper of the highest order and despite his Adonis frame, he was a weak rebounder and disinterested defender, save for the nights that Don Nelson would have him front and embarrass LaMarcus Aldridge in the post.

Maggette was around 6'5 though solidly built (220?). He's not a 5 even in today's NBA any more than the taller, heavier Jimmy Butler.

Warriors fan. Maggette was an effective player in bad Warriors teams but I did not like Maggette for the seem reasons I don’t like Harden. Maggette and Harden jump into defenders and then expect foul calls. I want players to try to put the ball in the hoop more than they try to get a foul call.

Whether you like his style or not, you have to admit he was awfully damn good at drawing fouls......he even puts Harden to shame.
It's actually kind of amazing he didn't have a better TS%, given how high his FTAr was. Fairly poor eFG%, though.

Can't help thinking Maggette would be sort of similar to what he was then [not like he was all that long ago]: a turnover-prone FT-machine, sort of limited [or at least not super-interested] defensively. *Not a great shooter, but not bad either.

*he might be better at that in today's league. He was showing signs before he sort of aged out: was 36.1% on 3.4 att/100 between '11 and '12. That's totally respectable, even by today's standards. His FTAr would suffer a bit for stylistic changes, but his eFG% is very likely to improve, so it'd come out in the wash.

He'd be a decent player. Definitely a starter on a weak team, more than likely a 6th man type of guy for a contender.

He was just a good stats bad team guy for me, amazing at getting to the line but a ball stopper with mediocre defense, hence the classic nickname of Bad Porn for having a lot of penetration but you don't like what you see. The Clippers best season was one he only played in 32 games. He would no doubt work on his 3pt shot more in modern day but I would guess his career is about the same as someone who puts up some stats and gets paid due to his slashing and FT drawing ability and has some years putting up 20 on the Kings or something, but overall not a big deal. I suppose as trex alluded to, in both early 2000s and now if a guy like this ends up in the perfect situation he has potential to win a 6MOY.

When you are going for the foul first it will hurt your EFG. In my opinion that is part of why Harden did not do so well in the playoffs; when Harden going for his normal regular season foul calls and the playoffs refs would make the call it hurts Harden. Hitting a shot after contact us more difficult then hitting a shot without contact regardless who created the contact.

Maggette can be a 1st option in a bad team or a 3rd or 4th option on a championship team. When the team offense breaks down Maggette can still score.

I'd also point out that Maggette was good as a 1 on 1 defender but abysmal as a team/help defender. As team defenses have generally gotten more complicated, I think he'd struggle a lot on defense.
