I would think Gasol’s passing and shooting gives him the edge even if Gobert is better defensively.

Gobert a better finisher and rim runner though. But like you mentioned, shooting and passing make Gasol probably more versatile even in PNR

I really like Marc's offense, not just in this comparison but in a vacuum I think it is underrated an d maybe a tad misunderstood. If he had a more robust or creative offense than what the Grizzlies had it probably would be more apparent.

He's a very quick witted passer and a creative one at that. His shooting is good and he likes to shoot from different spots on the court. He could be a great hub to get offensive sets going. Good screener too if I can recall with that chubby ol' body.

I dont think he has the stats to back it up, but I think he is closer to Pau than most give him credit for.

I'd put him over Gobert for now, though I do think Gobert is in another tier of defender. I'd just like to see Gobert on another team to see how far his defense can take a team that is more balanced.

Id prolly take prime or at least peak Marc over Pau TBH. Massive defensive edge and really good offensive big. Rudy too

Marc's obviously got a much wider offensive repertoire. Another tier of big man passer [very obviously], more shooting range, more ability to create in the post [though not what I would call a scoring hub]. Decent screener in his own right, too.

I think Rudy's on another tier as a defender, though (far better rebounder in general, too, including on the offensive glass). Though a lesser FT-shooter, he puts substantially more foul-pressure on the opponent, and a more substantial finisher at the rim [on relatively small volume, though]. He does have that interior gravity rolling to the rim that Marc cannot replicate, too. May be a better screen-setter than Marc, too, fwiw.

Personally, I lean toward Gobert in a vacuum. I generally think his edges on defense and defensive rebounding are pretty substantial. And given his interior gravity when rolling at the rim, excellent screening, his strong [if low volume] finishing, foul-pressure, and his offensive rebounding, I think he provides enough value to where I think his offensive deficiency [relative to Marc] is smaller than his defensive edge.
Though I certainly see the case for Marc. The broader offensive repertoire makes him more offensively resilient in the playoffs. It could come down to fit, really.

If Rudy had just a bit better hands, and maybe a little more "destroy the rim" attitude inside.....I'd say it'd be more clearly him.
