History of the NBA MVP award

1956-1993: 38 American MVPs

1994: Hakeem Olajuwon

1995-2004: 10 American MVPs

2005: Steve Nash
2006: Steve Nash
2007: Dirk Nowitzki

2008-2018: 11 American MVPs

2019: Giannis Antetokounmpo
2020: Giannis Antetokounmpo
2021: Nikola Jokic
2022: Nikola Jokic

With Jokic presumably winning the 2022 MVP award, an international player has now won in four straight seasons, the most in NBA history. Before this streak, there had only been four MVPs awarded to an international player - that total has now doubled.

How long do you think this active streak will last?

It became a guarantee that the streak would continue this season with the top three candidates all being international players (Jokic, Embiid, Giannis). The oldest of which is Embiid, who is still just 28-years-old. 23-year-old Luka Doncic will also surely have a solid chance at entering the mix as a strong MVP candidate. These four international players are some of the top contenders to continue the streak

On the other side, it seems that the regular top American contenders of the past decade (Curry, Durant, LeBron, Harden) could certainly retire without another MVP win. I think of those four Curry is the most likely (with how good the Warriors are looking, I could see a dominant regular season from them next year... dont see the other three winning another one).

The premier young Americans include the likes of Morant, Tatum, Trae, but I'm not sure I'd expect any of them to immediately snag an MVP award.

Embiid's crying ass is 99% winning the MVP next season as long as Philly wins close to 50 games or more, unless a clear superstar juggernaut with a +60 win team emerges (other than Jokic or Giannis). And that's pretty likely in my book.

So probably a couple more years.
