I am assuming that the criteria for this award is for the best player in the series.

So players on the losing team such as Lebron in 2009 and Wilt in 1965 would still win the award by a landslide as they were clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in those ECF despite being on the losing team.

Conference MVP will be like the finals MVP.It will be to the best players to the winning team(only exception was Jerry West back in 1969 or 53 years ago)

I am split between Russell and Wilt for 1966.

As while in the 1966 ECF Boston beat Philly, 4-1.

In that series, Wilt dominated Russell in the first four games (hell, newspaper accounts claimed that Wilt, in his lowest-scoring game of that series, almost single-handedly won the game)...and in-game five, he shelled Russell with a 46-34-8 game.

Overall, Wilt averaged 28.0 ppg, 30.2 rpg,, 3.2 APG, and on a .50.9 FG%.

To Russell's 14 PPG 26.2 PG 5.6 AST on a 42.4 FG%

I'm torn on this because this is another situation where the NBA is adding more awards that are fun while managing to avoid the stuff that would be really valuable - all-season MVP or at least playoff MVP.

My guess would be that they'd be a bit more willing to give it to the star on a losing team with an award like this than for the Finals MVP, but I'm with you that any notion that a guy could win the award when his team loses 4-1 is unrealistic. I think it's got to be a 4-2 or 4-3 series, and the candidate on the losing team has not simply feel like the "most outstanding player" but has to finish really strong in the final game, likely in a very close match that could have gone either way.

I cannot imagine a losing player actually ever getting this award like FMVP (except for the first one obviously). It would take an extraordinary circumstance for that to happen.

Now, maybe because this is a "new" award people will vote differently suddenly, but I still can't imagine it it happening, especially if its a similar panel to FMVP.

He might have won, and I personally would have voted for him, but Howard gave the dominant performance of the clinching game. Knowing what I know about voters, I'd guess they'd side with Howard.
