If you could draft Oscar Robertson or Jason Kidd for today's game who are you going with and why? Btw I think big guards would thrive in any era

This isn't a serious comparison is it? One guy's a consensus top 15 all time player and the other is maybe top 40 at best?

I like Kidd as far as his transition play and his defense and everything, but Oscar could actually score quite well and was certainly no worse as a playmaker. There's a laaaaaaaarge gap in offensive value between the two. Very large.

I think Oscar with just a little practice on his 3 pt shot would be a top 4 player in the league right now.

Based on Jimmy Butler, it might not even be necessary.

He may not even need practice to have a 3 pt shot either. You can see his range on the old footage.

Ah, you mean you think he'd already have the range. Yeah, it's possible. I don't think he'd be a 35% guy out of the gate, especially because Oscar liked to game his way in as close as he could before shooting, but it wouldn't be too challenging for a dude like him to become competent from 3.

Imaging Oscar in modern game is an interesting thought experiment indeed. He had comparable bodytype to James Harden, but his approach was much different.

Do you see him becoming mismatch hunter like Luka? Or more methodical playmaker like Chris Paul? Or maybe something else?

I haven't seen enough footage of Oscar on defense but I think there's a gap between Oscar and Kidd there. From what I've heard Oscar wasn't bad but Kidd was an elite defender and I don't think Oscar is in his league there.

Oscar is definitely better scorer but Kidd carried teams even without that being a strength. Took the Nets to two Finals appearances. He turned into a respectable 3pt shooter as well. I think Kidd definitely has a argument

That's really what made me ask the question. Just imaging Oscar in the modern game and gauging how the rest of you thought of him as a player. I think you guys are underrating Kidd but thrilled to see more ppl think as highly of the Big O as I do.

I see Oscar as some where between CP3 and Luka. He's like a bridge between them. Just in approach and control of the game as a floor general. His midrange in today's space would be deadly. And I think he would be similar to Luka from the 3pt line with some training. Luka isn't a deadeye but he'd make you pay. Definitely fun imaging Oscar in today's game

those nets teams had middle of the pack offenses but the best defenses in the league

oscar carried the best offenses but often had bottom tier defenses

i think the defensive impact of a PG is limited so i find it hard to blame oscar for the royals' defensive deficiencies and while kidd was a great defensive point guard, i wouldnt give him all the credit for the nets' #1 ranked defenses because i dont think it's possible for a PG to carry a team to the top defense in the league.

Oscar. Much stronger scorer, considerably more capable in the half-court (at least in part because of the scoring).

What's your thought on Oscar today? What approach would he likely choose in your opinion? P&R maestro? Mismatch hunter?

Good question, curious your thoughts.

I'm inclined to say mismatch hunter, which is interesting because I've said I see him and Chris Paul somewhat similarly, but I kinda feel like if you're capable of being that apex bully in today's game, you probably will be.

Oscar was a better score and Kidd was better on almost everything else, with that, Oscar by a mile.

I'm not giving Kidd all the credit for the Nets defense I'm more so speaking of him individually he's made the All Defensive team 9x's and was just a complete stud on that end so while I think Oscar has the edge offensively I think Kidd has a considerable edge defensively. I'm aware Defensive teams didn't exist for most of or all of Robertson's career but I don't have any evidence he was in Kidd's league on that end.

Also in today's league perimeter defense is a premium. Having an elite or capable defender especially at the guard position is vital like at what Jrue Holiday does for the Bucks and to a lesser degree Smart on the Celtics
