What would the modern scoring equivalent of the '69 Celtics be, specifically for Bill Russel?

What would the modern scoring equivalent of the '69 Celtics be, specifically for Bill Russel?

Post#1 » by WestGOAT » Tue Jun 14, 2022 11:37 pm

I've been collecting playoff scoring stats and I did not realise how poor Russel's number offensive numbers looked for this run.

Made me wonder if Playoffs 2022 Draymond Green on even lower volume would be a fair comparison?

What about the rest of his teammates? Any suggestions?

Nelson = RS 2016 Kevin Durant playing very limited minutes (I'm not kidding his relative PP100 and TS% are insane)
Havlicek = RS 2012 Paul Pierce
Howell = RS 1993 Detlef Schrempf
Jones = RS 2019 CJ McCollum
Siegfried = RS 2005 Mike Bibby
Bryant = RS 2006 Gary Payton

Playoff scoring stats:

Year           Player Pos  Age   Tm   G   MPG  PP100   TS%  TSA100    TSA
0  1969      Don Nelson*  SF   28  BOS  18  19.3   27.7  57.6    24.0  194.4
1  1969   John Havlicek*  SG   28  BOS  18  47.2   23.2  51.7    22.4  442.7
2  1969   Bailey Howell*  PF   32  BOS  18  30.6   21.1  52.5    20.1  257.2
3  1969       Sam Jones*  SG   35  BOS  18  28.6   25.4  46.4    27.3  326.4
4  1969  Larry Siegfried  PG   29  BOS  18  21.8   21.8  49.1    22.2  202.8
5  1969        Em Bryant  PG   30  BOS  18  33.7   14.0  45.8    15.3  216.3
6  1969    Bill Russell*   C   34  BOS  18  46.1   10.1  44.8    11.3  217.6

While they were great on defence in the playoffs (-5 rDTrg), they turned out to be still pretty good on offence (+2 rORtg).

Draymond is pretty close for Russell (they're both around 6th/7th in scoring and efficiency), 2016 Duncan is an option as well

I think the teams with Howell were probably some of their best offensive supporting casts.

Howell, Nelson, and Sam Jones were probably the most efficient scorers Russell played with, though I haven't calculated Sharman and Ramsey from the 50s. Sam was down from his peak years, Howell was still playing extremely well. What numbers are you using for your comps as I don't remember Siegfried being anywhere close to Bibby as either an efficiency or volume scorer?
