Lowest reasonable ranking for Hakeem?

Post#1 » by 1993Playoffs » Mon Jun 27, 2022 11:36 am

I suppose if your very low on his pre 1993 offense, lack of passing in his early career, lack of team success for most of career etc

What’s the lowest you can reasonably rank Hakeem?

I think you could get him in the 15-20 range tbh.

Anywhere past 20 is ridiculous.
Anything between 15-20 is questionable, but presumably reasonable under sufficiently skewed criteria.
Anything between 10-15 is to be expected.
Anywhere in the Top 9 is again questionable, but fun to consider!

FWIW (here at RGM not much at all I bet lol), here is where Dream ranked recently on 75th Anniversary Lists:
ESPN (of NBA) ~ SLAM ~ The Athletic ~ HoopsHype
13 ~ 13 ~ 11 ~ 11

You could drop him into the top 15-20 quite easily

How is taking 18 or 19 players over Hakeem quite easy?

I find any ranking outside top 15 hard to justify. Hakeem was simply too good for too long to rank him that low, within reasonable criteria of course.

Depends on your criteria. If you go strictly by resume its not that difficult to push him out of the top 15.

Well i’m asking you, what criteria specifically? Rings?

Team Success, accolades, achievements, statistics, longevity.

When you consider and weigh all of these things I think you can name 11 players who have a definitively better resume than Olajuwon:

Russell, Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Lebron, Steph

Then you have 6 more of whom you could make a case for:

Cousy, Oscar, West, Dr J, Moses, KD

So that's 17 players you could reasonably consider to be greater than Hakeem Olajuwon based on their resumes.

I don’t consider KD or Moses to be reasonable and Cousy is definitely a bizzare option, but we can disagree of course.

Why are KD and Moses not reasonable? And why is Cousy a 'bizarre' choice?

I think there's a point where criteria is unreasonable as well though and can't be taken that seriously.

Feels like anything in the teens or later would require you TRYING to justify moving him down.

What would you consider "unreasonable criteria"?

It's unreasonable to think he's any worse than guys like Shaq or Duncan or any other top 10 (more like a top 12-13 nowadays) player.

His career has been worse than the guys in the top 10 though.

Give him Penny, Kobe, Wade, LeBron and let's see how his career unfolds.

Sure but that is just speculation
