What are you defining as max contract caliber? is it being worth a 25% max, a 30% max, or is it only 35% max worthy guys? Does it matter if a player actually performs at a max contract worthy level for the season(s) in question, or is it fine if they're vaguely worthy of a max contract in a 'best case scenario' even if they didn't perform anywhere near that level in a given season?

Performance, not actual contract. In terms of which max, subjective. I had 30% in mind.

The problem with determining "max contract" players is that the threshold for being such a player had changed over the course of NBA history has changed. So in general I don't like this sort of analysis.

So every player in NBA history “better” than LaVine now deserves to be a max? What an awful argument.

But still… by what measure are all those guys obviously so much better than LaVine?

Why stop at LaVine? Why not compare everyone in NBA history against Chandler Parsons max deal? By that measure pretty much every team has 3-4 max players

What is a deserving MAX player? Rough estimate I would divide the number of teams in the league by 2 and round up. I don't believe every team has a deserving max contract player; I didn't think Brad Beal deserved one this year except maybe to compensate him for years of playing for our incompetent franchise without asking out. But not as a pure talent.

That would make roughly 15 players in today's league based on expected value (not just the season just completed).

Wouldn't the Warriors have like 4: Curry - Thompson - Wiggins - Green?

Considering everyone not in their first 4 years, at least an all something or team leading scorer in the previous 2-4 years, not in their declining years or actually being paid peak salary by their team:
