Which player gets underrated the most because of recency bias?

Similar idea as the other thread. Personally I was thinking maybe Russell Westbrook? In the 2019 Peaks project he was top 25 now it looks like he won't even be in the top 40.

Seems like there was a lot more recency bias going on in 2019 if that's the case. That's an insane ranking in hindsight.

Are we talking active player who had a bad couple of years like Westbrook or are we talking George Mikan or Bob Davies?

Yeah Westbrook over Kawhi is wild, but I agree there’s a bit of bias against him as he’s suddenly transformed into the worst basketball player in human history lol

Active or retired, pretty much anyone that you think is underrated by recency bias.

Maybe Trae Young because of his weak series against Miami. Also, him often being compared to Luka doesn't help. I think the Miami matchup was especially a bad for him, a team that can switch everything, and doesn't give him room for a pull-up, or mismatch hunt. Lowry+Vincent+Dipo+Butler+Tucker+Bam almost seems are physical enough to frustrate small, not-super duper athletic guards.
Trae Young #2 in the league offensively in just about all the major impact metrics such as
O-Backpicks BPM
O-EPM
O-RAPTOR
O-LEBRON
It's not even just the 22 season where he was unreal.
NBA Shot Charts 19-22 O-RAPM, has him as #2 in O-RAPM. Luck-adjusted NBA Shot Charts O-RAPM, has him #2 from 19-22 as well. He's an incredible RS offensive force and I think serves as a good offensive floor-raiser. The Hawks had the 2nd best offense in the 22 season despite dealing with several injuries and overall being "disappointing" to many.
Assuming what you think of him as a PS performer in 2021, I think that is closer to who he actually is as a player. I think he might have more trouble getting a bucket compared to the guys he is competing with for a top 5 spot, but his playmaking is so otherworldly, maybe he should be here regardless.
He also isn't quite the isolation guy I would like in the PS either which might be another dent against him.
However he played against 3 top 10 defenses in 2021, and while his efficiency wasn't great, he still had plenty of volume as a scorer. As a matter of fact, if you look at the top guys in 19-21 Playoff LEBRON offensive impact, he is #2 behind Steph. Now Steph and him only have 1 run each in this span, but I think it exemplifies some of what he showed in that 21 PS run that he comes out so high.
This has been with him shooting not quite as well from 3 in the PS, as he has in the regular season. Should that portion of his game pick up in the PS, he is maybe even better then he has shown

I'll say high scoring wings who couldn't shoot 3's.

I'm gonna go with Artis Gilmore. Too bad he didn't join the bulls of the early 70s and battled against Wilt, Kareem, Reed, Thurmond and others.

the real answer is all those point guards who played before point guards were primarily scorers. So you see guys like Stockton and Kidd consistently badly underrated and other guys basically forgotten entirely. One weakness this board has is seeing basketball progress and dismissing those who were part of that progression but weren't playing the way guys play today. It's like this belief is everyone played "wrong" before and therefore sucked.

I sort of agree but I also think he's probably been underrated since the 90's.

I think a lot of guys whose games that aren't seen as as 'effective' in the modern NBA have had their stock drop a lot. Clyde Drexler's ranking has gone down a lot. Julius Erving used to have a pretty firm place in the top 10-15. Dwight Howard got snubbed super hard on the 75th anniversary team - If that team was made in 2009 he would for sure have a spot.
