As always, I would like to do more research before committing to any one answer but 89-91 off the top of my head are ahead.

88, 92, and 93 would be the other ones in discussion, though I don't want to commit to any answers on those years.

None, I prefer 1974 and 1977 Kareem over any version of Jordan.

I''m confident about 1990 and 1991. After that it gets harder but I'm leaning towards 89 over any Kareem year as well. So that would be 3 MJ seasons over peak Kareem for me.

Probably every year between 88-93 or so.

Why?

Well, for starters Kareem did a better job in 1977 as a floor raiser than Jordan ever did in my opinion, considering the strength of their rosters. I also think Kareem did a bit better against top tier defensive competition than Jordan, at least after 1973 when he refined his offensive game.

Defensive gap is also massive in favor of Kareem. Even though I don't think Kareem peaked on offense and defense at the same time, in 1974-78 Kareem was still elite defensively, just below the top tier.

I think Jordan has reasonable arguments, but I trust Kareem's scoring and two way impact more.

What makes 1988 ahead of years like 1974 or 1977? I don't see it personally.

1990 and 1991. Kareem to me has the 2nd best peak ever, really has no weaknesses in his game.

Somewhere in the range of zero to five when trying to assess more absolutely. Relative to their respective leagues, easy zero, or maaaaaybe one at best just because of how rough 1992 was on all the other top players (Magic out, Hakeem and Robinson injured and missing the playoffs, Bird injured and on his way out…).

I don’t think 88 is really much below his other years when you examine it. It was arguably his best defensive season, and the Bulls didn’t really perform any worse than they did the following 2 seasons on average. If you agree 89-91 have cases, I don’t see why not 88. 92 and 93 are probably more iffy than not, but that entire span was just an off the head answer. Though of course i’m not as high on Kareem’s peak as you, so there’s going to be some disagreements.

Kareem’s peak for me is probably closer to 7-8 than it is to 1st.

I think peak Kareem is probably better than MJ. It's close enough that I could see it either way. It's basically Kareem's def edge vs MJ's ability to go nuclear in the playoffs but Kareem's scoring may be just as resilient.

I'm really surprised by some people saying there are 5 or 6 MJ seasons better than Kareem's best.

I'm personally thinking maybe '91 and that's it.

Maybe ‘91 but Kareem has a good case too.

Do you believe relative or absolute dominance matters more in terms of evaluating an all-time season (ex. It might be harder to get separation in a stronger league even if your absolute value is more). Do you think it can be a mix of both? Interested on your thoughts on this.

Less than a handful. Perhaps 89-92?

If I reevaluate Kareem it might be none. It's pretty hard to take a guard over a guy like that.

Kareem lost with HCA both of those years as the favorite to guys who were considered lesser.

Jordan's defense is dismissed here. He was a great defender and in a big man era, with all the effect a big has on team winning, Jordan carried his teams. Been seeing some 80s games of the Bulls with Jordan and the man created it all almost all the time. His teammates were either young and undeveloped (Horace and Pippen) or just not that good.
