Top 10 Players (Currently)

Post#1 » by The-Power » Sun May 28, 2023 1:46 pm

Who are your top 10 players right now?

I currently feel like there's a top 2, followed by 9 players that are difficult for me to differentiate, and a couple more players for whom I could see an argument to put them in the top 10. So I'm curious to read your thoughts and rankings.

Interesting. You have Kawhi much higher than I do, I debated whether or not to have him in the top 10 at all. Also, I don't think Luka is in the same tier yet as Joker and Giannis who are my 1/2. But overall, our lists are similar. Where do you land on Booker and Lillard? To me, those two both have good arguments for being included in the top 10 (I'm inclined to have Booker in it and Lillard just out of it, but I'm not firm on that).

Off the top of my head probably something like

Jokic
Giannis
Embiid
Luka
Steph
Butler
Kawhi
Davis
Tatum
Lillard

Honestly i'd definitely take healthy lebron over some of these guys but leaving him off because placing him is difficult

I'm a believer in healthy Kawhi and higher on him than most. Under the same thinking, maybe Lebron could sneak into the fringe top 10 but oh well.

I wouldn't have Lillard, as I've never liked his PS play really. He doesn't have enough counters, midrange/in-between game for my liking. I've written posts about this in the past,

I totally forgot about Booker. He could possibly be here. I probably forgot about him as this is the first year I would consider him in discussion for top 10, while Tatum and Booker have been in the discussion before. I honestly can't say he doesn't deserve to be here.

I actually missed that LeBron wasn't on there. I'd still have him in the top 10, too. I understand the thinking about healthy Kawhi but can we realistically assume that he can even physically last through longer stretches in the playoffs? To me, that matters. Even if we do not factor in injury-concerns, are we confident that he can maintain his level of play at this point in his career even if he managed to suit up? It's a tough question.

Yeah, the reason he is at the bottom of tier 1 is because of that durability.

When I do my POTY section of the ballot, I’ll get to it. Haven’t thought of a ranking too much yet, but I think there are 12 Weak-MVP or higher players in the league.

Lillard, Curry, Doncic, Butler, Tatum, Leonard, Durant, James, Davis, Giannis, Embiid, Jokic.

Do we assume lebron and AD get surgery or finishes rehab or not lol because that’s the difference between top 5 and out of the top 10

Jokic, curry, Giannis - my clear top 3 imo, Jokic having clear seperation for me at 1.

Luka is clearly alone at 4 for me.

I think after this playoffs, 5-9 is really murky and difficult to judge with Joel, KD, Tatum, Butler, AD all having cases depending on your value system and I'm finding it really hard to properly judge this group, and think it's the most interesting range of guys to debate atm.

Think Dame, Kawhi, Lebron all could push into that group too, Kawhi and Lebron have major health concerns atp, and Dame would be at the back end of that group for me anyways.

I'd be curious to hear people's rankings and justifications for that Joel/KD/Tatum/Butler/AD group since I'm having issues with it

Serious question: how is Doncic over Butler currently when Doncic couldn't even lead his team to the playoffs?

Wait, LeBron played more games than AD this year and had comparable impact and somehow, "LeBron [...] could push into that group [if not for] major health concerns" while AD is 5-9?

Jimmy is TOP 5. Advanced metrics say he was TOP 5 in the regular season, then proceeded to have the most improbable run to the NBA Finals (according to betting odds) w/o 2 of Miami's key rotation players.

KD has had consecutive underwhelming playoff runs, I can't put him above Tatum/Jimmy. Embiid hasn't shown to be that guy in the playoffs and I'm not sure if he ever will. AD was never capable of leading a team to a chip as a clear #1.

You're right, my logic on that ranking my be too inconsistent tbh. I think I liked peak AD's output this year more, but yeah I do think you've exposed a flaw in my thinking there.

Ranking players is hard, and trying to smooth out the flaws in your own thought process is always one of the more enjoyable parts of the journey for me

If I’m raking guys I don’t really factor in availability, I just think who is the best at basketball if they’re all healthy:

1. Jokic
2. Curry
3. Giannis
4. Embiid
5. Kawhi
6. Luka
7. LeBron
8. Durant
9. Butler
10. Tatum
