current/future Herbert Jones vs Jaden McDaniels

Post#1 » by Devilzsidewalk » Tue Jun 6, 2023 5:23 pm

~Herb has a little better rebound percentage, steal percentage, and assist percentage, and a better free throw rate as well.McDaniels has a slightly higher block percentage.

~Same off EPM, but Herb has a 2.6 to 1.5 advantage in defensive EPM.

~Spot-up PPP: 0.98 to 0.86 PPP advantage for McDaniels.

~deflections: 3.4 for Jones, 2.3 for McDaniels.

~Rim defense defended FG% differential (<6 feet) +4.1% for Jones, -7.2% for McDaniels

~3 point defended FG% differential: -7.4% for Jones, -0.2% for McDaniels

~shooting breakdown - roughly the same 2 point to 3 point shot ratio; McDaniels takes slightly more 3s (.376 of his shots vs .333 for Jones). This boosts his overall shooting efficiency (61% TS to 57% for Jones) a lot as he's increased his 3 point shooting to .398 this past season vs .335 for Jones. Biggest difference is in corner 3s - both take about 51% of their 3s from the corner, but Jaden converts at .419 vs .337

So taking all that into consideration, you could roughly surmise that both are excellent defenders. Jones though starts very strong on the perimeter, and gets progressively worse as you get towards the rim. McDaniels is the inverse - relatively mediocre on the perimeter, but elite nearing the rim. I thought that could be heavily influenced due to Gobert lurking vs Valanciunas, but McDaniels was even better the previous seasion (21-22) with no Gobert: -12.7% differential, putting him with the leaders of the NBA like Jaren Jackson Jr, Giannis, and Gobert.

Offensively, neither do much shot-creation and are mostly spot up shooters and cutters. McDaniels' free throw rate increased a lot this past season, but Jones still has a clear advantage in drawing contact. McDaniels' shooting efficiency this past season was rather eye-popping tough.

Overall, who's your guy today and going forward? I personally would pick McDaniels because of his age, and the shooting percentages really intrigue me - I'm curious if he can be legitimately a top-shelf dangerous shooter in addition to providing All-NBA tier defense. But in an era where firing quick 3s off a screen is almost unguardable, and more and more players are getting good at it...you can't underestimate how much value Jones' perimeter defense is. If you can turn a 38% 3 point shooter into a 33% shooter, that ability alone can win you a playoff game.

Come on, this is easily Jaden McDaniels. Don't do Herb Jones like this.
