Best ever offensive big men, and how they compare to Jokic?

Post#1 » by ceiling raiser » Tue Jun 13, 2023 2:32 am

The conversation generally seems centered around guys like:

Kareem
Barkley (if you count him as a big)
Shaq
Dirk

but Jokic really seems to be the new standardbearer. Passing, shooting, ball-handling, screen-setting, offensive rebounding, off-ball movement, gravity, he has it all.

Where does Jokic fit into the pantheon of the GOAT offensive big men, and how does he compare to the other guys above?
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

I think Jokic is probably the best. I think it's now really becoming mainstream knowledge how sick of a scorer he is and he can score in so many different ways with near equal effectiveness.

His passing is kind of been known since nearly day 1 even by deniers.

Jokic is in his own class at this point

Jokic is the greatest offensive player ever, so he's obviously better than any big man.

He's clearly ahead of my GOAT offensive bigman up to that point (Kareem) and has been since 2021/22 season. It doesn't mean he's better overall, but his peak stacks up well among top 10 centers ever to say the least.

Chamberlain is still the best. He did what he did with very restricting rules that didn't allow him to bump anyone at all. If he was in any other era, except maybe the current one, he'd have probably averaged more points and had his share of great assists seasons.

What advantages do you think Wilt had offensively vs Jokic?

Strength, leaping ability, athleticism, length; the only one who ever compared to Wilt as an athletic outlier was Shaq. Jokic has clearly superior skills and BBIQ.

He's up there, but this is an overreation thread. Who had Jokic as their all-time best before the playoffs? Wilt and Kareem were arguably more dominant in their prime. lol @ Dirk and Barkley
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Why are you laughing at Dirk? You do realize this is offense only, right?

I had Jokic firmly in my Top 10-15 offensive players ever before this post-season.

Do you think Dirk and Barkley became all time greats by the virtue of their tremendous defense?

But did one playoff vault him to the top?

They're great, but not on a tier with Wilt or Kareem.

Did he just not exist is 2021 or 2022?

He was voted best player in the NBA in 2022 by this board by a landslide.

Probably everyone here lol.

I think he's the best offensive big of all-time and will be in the mix for best offensive player of all-time.

Forget the numbers and just look at his skill-set. Is there another player in history who is as complete of an offensive player? I can't name one to be honest.

I wouldn't go that far. Oscar, Magic, LeBron all can compete with Jokic in terms of "completeness" on offensive end.

Those 3 guys all need the ball in their hands to be who they are. Jokic doesn’t. He’s like an amoeba that can shape itself in whatever ways that allows his teammates to be at their most effective. And that’s the biggest difference to me.
