What if Denver 3 or 4 peats?

Post#1 » by Cavsfansince84 » Tue Jun 13, 2023 9:33 pm

Now normally I don't like to get too carried away with hypothetical stuff but there's 3 big factors which I think point towards this possibly happening:
1. They have Jokic who is only 28.
2. They have a young core that is all under contract for a few years(with room to improve the bench).
3. The league as a whole isn't really full of teams which should challenge them or any super teams which can out talent them.

So the question is how high does Jokic go with a 3 peat? Top 15? Top 10? I think we may see good vets willing to take a discount just to try and get a ring with them now that they've broken through as well. Denver could really dominate for 5-6 years even if its not a title every year. Very similar to what GS was in 2016 except they may have a superstar who is even more durable and dominant.

If he continued his current level of play(or ups it somehow) and Denver managed to 3-peat or 4-peat, I think there's a really strong argument for him being top 5, but I'd say top 10 is a cert.

I would be stunned if Denver 3-peats though. It's just incredibly difficult.

There's been only 4 teams who've 3-peated though in NBA history:

Russell's Celtics(8-peating)
Jordan's Bulls
Shaq/Kobe Lakers.

The Heatles didn't manage to do it. The KD/Curry Warriors didn't do it. Showtime Lakers didn't. Bird's Celtics didn't.

I know how rare it is but at the same time I think they have everything they would need so long as they can keep their core healthy. They have the best player in the league. Young guys under contract. No super teams to deal with on the horizon. Quality coach. The Heat had either depth or health issues all 4 years. Health caught up to GS in part by making so many finals in a row(5th straight final by the time they went for 3). I don't want to jinx it because I'll root for them so long as they don't face the Cavs but they are in a really great place.

^Mikans Lakers also 3-peated.

I’m a pretty big longevity guy, so I couldn’t say for sure on career, but in terms of prime (assuming similar level play) Jokic would have an argument against pretty much anyone at that point, though I’d probably still lean towards LeBron over him. Likely on a tier with Russell/MJ/KG/Duncan for me. Mikan a bit of an HM there, I’m not going to try to rank him, the data/info/tape is so sparse.
I bought a boat.

There's a big difference between 3-peating and 4-peating. But, at, let's say, a 3.5-peat, I'd have Jokic lurking around 5th (and barely over 30 years old) on my own lists - as a guess. Don't hold me to it if it happens.

It is but to some degree that is narrative based imo simply because only Russell's Celtics did it so far. Because if the Nuggets won 3 then faced some kind of Wemby/Luka superteam in 2026 for instance and lose in 6 while Jokic goes for 32/15/12 does that somehow make him less of a player? So personally it wouldn't make that much of a difference to me if Denver 4 peated or 3 peated. Of course it'd be a huge deal to fans& the media if they did but idk if 4 in a row means more than 4 total.

It's just a thread on a message board. I mean normally I'd agree but everything is really set up for them to dominate for the next 2-3 years. There might not be another team that wins 60 games over that period other than Denver.

He will then be the best big man ever and in secure top 3 conversation. Winning 4 with less help from a small market without changing teams, I may have him above LeBron, so top 2.

If Jokic wins 3 or even 4 - wether in a row or with interruptions due to injury or horse racing - i struggle to find a single reasonable argument to keep LeBron above him. He literally does everything better other than pure athleticism, and he is still on his first team. No all star team mates, no collusion, no "decision", no impatience, no drama, no flopping, no "its all about meeeeee!!!". Where one declares himself the GOAT, the other says it all does not really mean much.

There is not a single spot on his vest, so to say. What can you hold against him?
