21-23 Jokic. I'm curious how many players posters would say had 3 regular seasons on par or better than those 3 by him. Not necessarily in a row though I am open to that as well.

If talking in a row, then I’m genuinely not sure there’s anyone with a *better* three-regular-season span, though Jordan, Kareem, and LeBron have three-year spans that are roughly on par. If we are just talking about 3 seasons at different points in their career, then Jordan and LeBron perhaps have a case for having three better seasons overall, while I think Kareem’s case largely stays the same since his three best regular seasons were arguably in a row anyways (1970-1971 to 1972-1973). And I don’t really think that having it be 3 seasons at different points really introduces any other player that I’d put ahead of Jokic. Even with Jordan and LeBron, I think the 3-seasons-at-different-points analysis doesn’t actually leave them truly above Jokic, but rather still in the “on par” category. Jokic’s last three regular seasons have been extremely good!

For 3 years periods these have reasonable cases:
1950-52 Mikan
1963-65 Russell
1966-68 Wilt
1971-73 Kareem
1984-86 Bird
1989-91 Jordan
2002-04 Duncan
2003-05 Garnett
2009-11 (or 2012-14) LeBron
That's it.

Any reason you went with 50-52 Mikan instead of earlier years?
I've got '15-'17 Steph there. Shaq/Magic certainly have some cases. Given it's RS, Giannis is reasonable.
I bought a boat.

No serious reason outside of counting NBA seasons only.
Steph has a case, I forgot about him. Magic had a bit down RS in 1988, his 1987 + 1989-90 would put him there. Don't see the case for Shaq, he didn't have 3 straight RS on that level. Giannis could be there, but I don't think 2021 is strong enough.

15-17 Curry
2012-2014 or 2016-2018 LeBron
89-91 Jordan
I think thats about it. If PS is also included, then it's just LeBron and Jordan.

Hmm, fair enough I guess, I don't see '88 Magic/'21 Giannis/several Shaq years as particularly weak compared to '21 Jokic.

Keep in mind that it doesn't necessarily need to be 3 consecutive seasons. It can be any 3 and then if you want to do 3 in a row you can also do that.

I know, I just thought the consecutive seasons is more fun to compare.

What consecutive years would you take for Shaq? I don't think Shaq ever had comparable RS to Jokic last two ones outside of 2000. Even if you take 2001 over 2021, that's still 2nd best vs 3rd best. I don't think 1999 or 2002 fares well in this comparison.

If you have time maybe take a look at a post I just did in the top 100 thread on Russell and Thurmond since I know you are high on Nate.

I prefer either, but would have '00-'02 as his top 3 year run.
I'd take '01 over '22 as well. For all 7 I'd rank them as such:
1. '00 Shaq - 7th in minutes, +10.4 On, +10.9 On/Off, best team in the league
2. '23 Jokic - 47th in minutes, +12.0 On, +22.0 On/Off, 4th best team by record
3. '01 Shaq - 30th in minutes, +8.0 On, +15.6 On/Off, tied for 2nd best team by record
4. '22 Jokic - 18th in minutes, +8.4 On, +16.4 On/Off, tied for 10th best team by record
5. '21 Jokic - 3rd in minutes, +6.6 On, +6.4 On/Off, tied for 5th best team by record
6. '02 Shaq - 70th in minutes, +11.3 On, +9.9 On/Off, 3rd best team by record
7. '99 Shaq - 38th in minutes, +6.4 On, +10.0 On/Off, tied for 7th best team by record
'21 Jokics #1 relative quality here being availability. For player quality outside of that I'd probably prefer Shaq from '98-'04 or so.
I bought a boat.

I think if you go 19/20/22 Giannis might be on the same level.

Quite alot, including Giannis, Curry and Kawhi in recent years.

3-year shotschart and career/5-year ahmed RAPM does prefer Embid for some reason. I think the floodgates open up a bit with Jokic if you go by 3-years as opposed to 1 emperically.
Outside of that, a non-rim-protecting big will never really have a great argument vs a two-way big simply going off eyetest or "skill-set"

If it’s regular season only, I can’t imagine what Kawhi’s case would look like.
For me this would take a lot of thinking but here’s some canidates.
Lebron
Jordan
Kareem
Shaq
Wilt
Russell
Bird
Drob
KG
Giannis
Curry
Magic
Duncan
Regular season is different than combining RS with PS. For example, I wouldn’t really consider Drob much at all once PS is included. If it’s PS only, Hakeem overtakes half this list or more.
Needless to say I don’t think Jokic is an automatic top 10 guy for regular season peak even though he’s in strong consideration there.

I think it's incredibly hard to argue Kawhi ever had a single regular season as good as 21 Jokic.
About 2018 Cavs:

I prefer my stars without glaring weaknesses that will be exploited in the playoffs 9 years out of 10.
