Top 100 - Expected Titles (by SRS) vs Actual Titles

With the top 100 project going, I figured now was the time to make this post. Maybe it's already been done elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. I basically took the 2020 Top 100 players and looked at their expected titles (by regular season SRS) and compared to their actual titles won. If a team lost before the finals, I simply used the subsequent opponents they would have played based on how the other parts of the playoff bracket worked out. So this year Lebron's expected titles were based on:

Lakers vs Memphis (0.43 vs 3.6) = 0.242 Win Probability
Lakers vs Golden State (0.43 vs 1.66) = 0.374 Win Probability
Lakers vs Denver (0.43 vs 3.04) = 0.279 Win Probability
Lakers vs Miami (0.43 vs -0.13) = 0.509 Win Probability

The first list is simply in the order of the 2020 Top 100 (plus Butler, Tatum, and Luka) in terms of expected vs actual titles.

As can be seen, most of the highest ranked players exceed expectations. Is this just because we rank players higher when they win (ringz)? Is it an indication that SRS simply can't account for greatness and, in a sport like basketball where one player has so much impact, the best players are expected to turn the probable into the inevitable in the playoffs?

The next list is in order of expected championships. Hakeem finishing 98th not only shows that he won without a ton of surrounding talent, but with almost historic levels of poor surrounding talent. And he won twice!

The next list is ranked by the absolute delta between expected and actual champions. As expected, Russell is near the top. Kobe comes out looking pretty good, basically 2nd behind the russell celtics. Kareem comes in 19th place and Duncan in 24th place even with 6 titles and 5 titles, respectively.

The next list is ranked by the percentage delta between expected and actual champions. Hakeem just laps the field with an almost 20x ratio. Russell gets knocked down quite a bit but hard to be at the top when 7 is expected (+86% would have been his max). Kobe once again comes out in 2nd place. With a decent amount of separation on Shaq on both lists, so it's not just Shaq's regular/season playoff switch-flipping doing it all.

I suspect the top players here have a much higher winning percentage in virtually every circumstance across the board.

For example, maybe teams win with a 1.5 SRS advantage 70% of the time (just using hypothetical numbers here). But with one of those top players, maybe the number is more like 90%. And when it is a 0.5 SRS disadvantage, maybe the average team wins 45% of the time, but with a top player, they can be expected to win 70% of the time. And you could incorporate road data into that too; I recall you previously looking into the approximate SRS effect of playing on the road.

Fun to ponder either way.

that was my guess as well. i can't convince myself that "great players probably increase the advantage beyond what SRS tells us" is really any different than watching someone call 7 out of 10 coin flips correct and deciding they are a great coin-flip caller when the truth is, in terms of the sample size of playoff series in someone's career, some players will probably just win more than they should because some players have to and some players have to underperform. on the other hand, many other factors tell us the same "championship overperformers" are better than everybody else as well. it's certainly hard to look at the 3-peat lakers having less than 1 combined expected title or jordan's bulls not even being expected to win 3 and think that SRS just can't really capture the greatness of the greatest players. i actually have plans to add a bonus amount of SRS in the spreadsheet until say, the top 20 or 25 players have the same expected championships as actual championships and to see what that extra value would need to be. but not sure when i'll get to it.

the calc currently assumes a 3 point/3 SRS home court advantage. i think that advantage has shrunk in recent years, but it's unlikely to shift the answers very much. the SRS effect ended up being small because it basically worked out that the homecourt advantage essentially just ends up being that you have game 7 at home (because up until then, road and home games cancel out). so a 3 point (per game) advantage only end up being a 3 point total advantage over the series divided by 7 games, so 0.4 SRS.

Fun to ponder either way.

i asked myself the same thing as i was finishing it because i couldn't remember why i didn't (i did most of the formulas a month or so ago). i actually have all the ABA data in there but it gets ignored. i think it was mostly that the Top 100 doesn't include ABA data and i don't find myself caring much about the ABA, so changing the formulas didn't feel worth it.

With the top 100 project going, I figured now was the time to make this post. Maybe it's already been done elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. I basically took the 2020 Top 100 players and looked at their expected titles (by regular season SRS) and compared to their actual titles won. If a team lost before the finals, I simply used the subsequent opponents they would have played based on how the other parts of the playoff bracket worked out. So this year Lebron's expected titles were based on:

Lakers vs Memphis (0.43 vs 3.6) = 0.242 Win Probability
Lakers vs Golden State (0.43 vs 1.66) = 0.374 Win Probability
Lakers vs Denver (0.43 vs 3.04) = 0.279 Win Probability
Lakers vs Miami (0.43 vs -0.13) = 0.509 Win Probability

As can be seen, most of the highest ranked players exceed expectations. Is this just because we rank players higher when they win (ringz)? The next list is in order of expected championships. Hakeem finishing 98th not only shows that he won without a ton of surrounding talent, but with almost historic levels of poor surrounding talent. And he won twice!

The next list is ranked by the absolute delta between expected and actual champions. As expected, Russell is near the top. Kobe comes out looking pretty good, basically 2nd behind the russell celtics. Kareem comes in 19th place and Duncan in 24th place even with 6 titles and 5 titles, respectively.

The next list is ranked by the percentage delta between expected and actual champions. Hakeem just laps the field with an almost 20x ratio. Russell gets knocked down quite a bit but hard to be at the top when 7 is expected (+86% would have been his max). Kobe once again comes out in 2nd place. With a decent amount of separation on Shaq on both lists, so it's not just Shaq's regular/season playoff switch-flipping doing it all.

Regular season transactions kind of muddy using overall regular season SRS and might underestimate their actual strength, this applies to Lakers 2023 and I guess also Rockets 1995, but probably this should "average" out for other teams as well. Another thing to look out for are championship teams that were coasting during the regular season, like the 2018 Warriors. Rockets were strong favourites based on SRS, but most of the "experts" had Warriors advancing: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23454202/expert-predictions-conference-finals-2018-nba-playoffs
So the 0.5 hit is a bit harsh against CP3 & Hardne. But as you probably also know, regular SRS cannot really take account stuff like that CP3 seems to breakdown specifically during the PS.

So 4.92 delta would put him over Havlicek for biggest delta (by a lot). Not only part of the 3-peat Lakers with only a combined 0.553 expected titles, but on the Rockets back-to-back titles which only had 0.063 expected titles. By comparison, his 1.31 expected titles vs 2 actual titles with the Spurs is a downright disappointment.

I wonder if any other role player can compare. i would think not. the only people with more actual titles are the 60's celtics and they have a lot of gimme titles to boost the expected number. and the lakers and rockets are on the extreme end of actual vs expected.


this is the list of champions sorted from lowest probability to highest. horry played for 4 of the toughest 20 and didn't play on any of the easiest 25. also, the russell celtics have 6 of the easiest 11 and 8 of the easiest 19.

i forgot to answer the same win probability question from WestGOAT.

for a given series, i take the average of the 2 team's offensive and defensive ratings as essentially the average "rating" of the series (you could probably just pick a generic ORtg value from history like 108 and not change anything).

so a 110 ORtg / 104 DRtg team playing a 107 ORtg / 105 DRtg team would have an average rating of 106.5.

then i take the SRS differential relative to the team i am looking at. so if i'm looking at lebron and cleveland is the +6 team in the example above, they would be a +4. then i just take half of that (2) and add it to the average rating to create the ORtg for Lebron's team and I subtract half of that to create the DRtg for Lebron's team. so:

ORtg = 106.5 + 2 = 108.5
DRtg = 106.5 - 2 = 104.5

for home games, i used a +3 advantage (compared to a neutral court), divided equally among offense/defense, so lebron's team would be:

Home
ORtg = 108.5 + 1.5 = 110
DRtg = 104.5 - 1.5 = 103

Away
ORtg = 108.5 - 1.5 = 107
DRtg = 104.5 + 1.5 = 106

for any individual game, then, the win probability is based on one of the Pythagorean formulas:

Win Prob = ORtg ^ 16.5 / (ORtg ^ 16.5 + DRtg ^ 16.5)

then, taking into account which team was the actual home team for the series, i do every win/loss permutation of the series for 3 or 5 or 7 games, using the Pythagorean win probabilities for each game, and get a cumulative series win probability by adding up all the permutations where the team wins the series.

i forgot to answer the same win probability question from WestGOAT.

for a given series, i take the average of the 2 team's offensive and defensive ratings as essentially the average "rating" of the series (you could probably just pick a generic ORtg value from history like 108 and not change anything).

so a 110 ORtg / 104 DRtg team playing a 107 ORtg / 105 DRtg team would have an average rating of 106.5.

then i take the SRS differential relative to the team i am looking at. so if i'm looking at lebron and cleveland is the +6 team in the example above, they would be a +4. then i just take half of that (2) and add it to the average rating to create the ORtg for Lebron's team and I subtract half of that to create the DRtg for Lebron's team. so:

ORtg = 106.5 + 2 = 108.5
DRtg = 106.5 - 2 = 104.5

for home games, i used a +3 advantage (compared to a neutral court), divided equally among offense/defense, so lebron's team would be:

I feel like one thing that gets ignored in rankings like this is that you end up praising players and/or teams that wildly underperform in the regular season as much as you praise players/teams that overachieve in the playoffs. Similarly you diss players and/or teams that overachieve in the regular season as much as players/teams that underperform in the playoffs.

2000-2001 season is a great example. Tim Duncan drags a roster of random parts to a great regular season but goes down easily in the playoffs. Stats like this then paint Duncan as a 'playoff loser' just because his team overachieved during the regular season. Meanwhile a Laker juggernaut with Shaq, Kobe (and Horry) no-show the regular season before winning title and are credited with being 'playoff heroes'. That Laker team is credited with the 3rd least likely title in the data set just because they wildly underachieved during the regular season, not from any playoff clutchness.

I think this goes to my point above. Shaq and Kobe frequently played on teams that underperformed during the regular season - 2001 most blatantly.

oh man. so i had the idea to make a spreadsheet like this about 15 years ago. but BBRef either didn't have the data or i didn't know where to find it and i would have had to basically manually input all the series results in nba history and also a lot of the SRS data. so i shelved the idea. then i saw this article from the Ringer:

which was what i had wanted to do all along. at the time, i'm pretty sure the article just had the data you see so i wanted a spreadsheet for the Top 100 and BBRef had way more easily available data like all series listed in order. but now the article has a link to a googledoc (or maybe it always did) which basically does what i just did, but for every player in nba history. so long story short, i would just look at the Ringer data (i don't have a massive media company at my disposal to collect data).

the good news is, all the numbers basically match (0.1 or 0.2 off here and there). kobe has such low numbers because he just faced a lot of good teams, and that cuts your odds down real quick. like the 2000 lakers, who were a dominant +8.4, still only had 39.4% odds because they faced a +3, a +4, a +5 and +6. a team like the 2013 thunder at +9.2 only had 35% odds because they had to basically beat two +7 teams. even if the 2001 lakers had played at the same +8.41 they did in 2000, their odds would only be 29.7% because the spurs and kings were so good and their other opponents were still respectable at about +4.

kobe's average 2nd round opponent is a +6.1 team, which is pretty incredible (5.9 if you include hypothetical 2nd round opponents). it's actually lower in the conference finals at +5.8.

Sorry, forgot to respond. yeah, this one is just 6 - 2 = 4. i think lakers/grizz was 0.4 - 3.7 = -3.3, resulting in 24.2% chance in a 7 game series as the road team for the lakers.

Have you considered using playoff adjusted SRS, similar to what Santerre explains in viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2021493&start=100, instead of using flat RS SRS? For example after every series you'd update a team's SRS.

This could help better take teams coasting in RS or having a big roster change after the trade-deadline in account.
