Donovan Mitchell or Jamal Murray

Post#1 » by mkot » Tue Jul 18, 2023 5:17 pm

Just re-watched some highlights of the epic duel in the bubble and wondering now with Murray coming back healthy this year, who turned out to be a better player individually or as a team player?

Who you got?

I don't know how their careers are going to unfold, but peak wise I'm taking Murray. His decision making is a lot better. Mitchell is still a very good puncher, but he's a chucker. When shots ain't falling Murray can be a big plus. Not so much with Mitchell.

Mitchell, I think being able to play with someone as talented as Jokic does a lot to help Murray. I will say , Murray did show he can hold his own and ramp up when needed- but If I’m not mistaken.. Mitchell is more impactful as a whole.

LOL, it was only a few months ago I was in the minority arguing Murray was a good enough #2 to win a championship with and now it’s a question whether he’s better than the 2nd best shooting guard in the league.

I still think its Mitchell, Murray has the gift of playing with the greatest player of his generation and really hasn't ever proved himself over the course of a whole season. He certainly has a chance to do that this year.

But to me if we swapped these guys I'd have a hard time thinking Murray would do better and I do think that Mitchell would be similarly successful in Denver.

If you want to break it down differently. To me, Mitchell is just such a better floor raiser it almost makes the rest irrelevant. While Murray may be superior as a ceiling raiser it's harder to compare directly when the guys have been in very different situations. Though I do think Mitchell deserves some credit for raising a roughly 2.5 SRS team into a 5.5 SRS team while replacing Lauri. His style of play deserves criticism at times for sure, but I don't think it's every negatively effected his team results, at least not any more than Murray's flaws have.

In a vacuum Mitchell is easily better. The questions becomes more tricky if you ask whether Denver would be better. I think Jokic and Murray have developed a chemistry that can’t be quickly replaced but give Mitchell enough reps and I think they’d be even better.

I can’t really see an argument for Murray being better, despite him clearly having a better postseason run this year. At the very least, as someone already mentioned, Mitchell is the better floor raiser and I personally think he’s better on both ends of the floor. Murray is the perfect second option to Jokic, I don’t think we’ve seen Mitchell in a situation where he has the perfect system surrounding him. Whether that changes this season with the shooting Cleveland has added and internal development from Garland/Mobley/Allen/Okoro remains to be seen.
