2003 TMac's offensive peak

Post#1 » by wafflzgod » Fri Aug 25, 2023 4:29 pm

Where do y'all think 03 TMac's offense stacks up among all-time offensive peaks. Just an absurd scoring machine, averaged 31.5pts/75 (34.9 adjusted to 2023!!) on +4.5 rTS% at the height of the deadball era, while frankly being one of the very best passing/creating non-PGs ever -- doing all this in a very bad offensive situation. I also like his off-ball chops, just think it couldn't be shown enough due to the poor roster around him (and Grant Hill's failing health).

Now the issue might be lack of playoff sample, which is a concern especially when ranking him among the all-time offensive forces. However, I think due to his ability to get to the rim, score at all 3 levels, his "bag", and his passing+creation ability, I think he would have fared fine over a larger playoff sample if he was on a team with a competent roster.

All in all, I think 03 TMac is a top 10 offensive peak of the post-3PT Line era. What do y'all think?

Chronological Tiers/Levels for me (getting to ten) would be..

Magic Jordan Nash LBJ Curry Jokic

Bird Shaq Kobe Dirk

I think after that, you get to names like Wade/Harden/Durant/Kareem (1980 here)/Paul(New Orleans)/Doncic, and that's more or less where McGrady would be. So solid case for T-15 since the league implemented 3P line.

Believe 1996 Penny Hardaway peaked a bit higher Offensively also.

28 games without Shaq: Penny averaged 27ppg 7 apg per 75 on +10% rTS.

Magic during that 28 game stretch had the 4th Best Offense and played at a 50 Win Pace.

On the Season, about roughly 25ppg IA/75 8apg +6.3% rTS.

Penny Hardaway was no.1 in the NBA in On-Off Net Swing in 1996.

It's an amazing off peak. It's just hard to know how well it actually scales towards a 57+ win team and through a playoff run. That's the semi question mark when comparing it to seasons like 87 Magic or 91 MJ. Same goes for some of Harden's seasons though TMac definitely gets some bonus points for the era he did it in.

After Bron, Jordan, Jokić, Curry, KD, Wade, Harden and Magic, in the same tier as peak Kobe, Nash, Kawhi, Giannis, Shaq, & Bird.
Probably right behind Kobe, at #10 to be more specific.
