Thought it would be good to start a series of threads on GOAT skills.

Re: GOAT Skills: Offensive Rebounding
It's either Rodman or Malone. Of the top ten seasons in off. reb. %, Rodman has three (including the highest of all time at 20.83 in 95) and Moses has four. So seven of the top ten seasons are held by just those two guys.

Agreed though Wilt might be in the discussion as well. Which is sort of doubtful tbh but since we don't have the data its hard to rule him out completely. I tend to think he was more of a monster on the def glass(same with Russell) though I'm sure both grabbed a lot of off rebs.

Re: GOAT Skills: Offensive Rebounding
No love for Andre Drummond who is 2nd all time in OReb% ahead of Moses? (and no, I have him behind Moses and Rodman too, much easier to pump this stat in the era of 4 out where everyone else is expected to get back on defense).

I'd go with Moses for the era where they were tracked. Can't really tell for earlier.
Pure rebounding it might be Rodman, but at least some of the value for an offensive rebound is in immediately producing a high value putback, and it seemed to me (I have no statistics past my eye test) that Rodman produced those at a notably lower rate than other great offensive rebounders (most notably Moses).

The best rebounder, also offensive rebounder, I have seen is Rodman, but I can defer to those who would say Moses.
Jokic is a great offensive rebounder when he isn't busy coming off of flare screens.

No Moses discount for rebounding his own shots?
Arguably a different skillset than "offball" OR positioning.

I have tracked many Moses games and the effect of these rebounds is negligible.

Re: GOAT Skills: Offensive Rebounding
We can't say for sure anything about pre-1974, otherwise Wilt and Mikan are in conversation.
Moses is my pick, mostly because teams tried more to stop him than Rodman and he faced the biggest guys on the floor most of the time.

Rodman could let Jordan/Pippen handle the scoring and he wasn't a floor spacer. He could-and did-have a myopic focus on rebounding.
Malone was more impressive because he had to focus on more than just rebounding. IMO his rebounding was more instinctual; Rodman was more methodical.
In terms of volume, Malone's top single seasons for offensive rebounds all time rank 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 13, 17. Rodman has spots 5 and 11.

As far as we know, anyway. Offensive rebounds weren't tracked until 1973-74. That's the entirety of Russell's and Wilt's careers and most of Nate Thurmond's.

Yes, it's also possible that Mikan could have a higher off. reb %, particularly given the lower shooting percentages of his era creating more rebounding opportunities. But for the years in which we have data, Rodman and Malone dominate that category.
