In this topic we are looking at team average ORtg (μOR) and standardized ORtg (zDR) (# of standard deviations above league average) over the specified seasons. Similar to the previous topic on overall DRtg (viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2364611), and now also including players with the highest total weighted (1xRS + 10xPS) minutes for the single-season window, adjusted to their team.

Showing all teams with at least 1 standard deviation of ORtg above league average, and once again no teams with overlapping season-windows.

Quick Notes:
- How good was prime Rudy Tomjanovich?
- Is it reasonable to claim Lebron + help ~= prime Curry + Durant? (I guess Curry's PS injuries capped the average ORtg of GSW)
- 04-06 SEA comparable 85-87 BOS? Not sure what to make of that hehe

1. FWIW (and it's probably not worth much, if anything), Rudy was 5th in Engelmann's offensive coaching RAPM. Again probably not worth much, but it's neat!

2–3. I think injuries are the big thing here. If you're still using a postseason = 10x regular season weighting, that's a very heavy postseason weighting (heaviest of any overall stat I know of). Which might generally improve the sample, but it definitely can make us underrate multi-year spans that are disrupted by injuries. The Warriors had the best rORTG of the decade in 2016, then as we all know, Curry got injured. He came back after some missed games, but he wasn't the same, and neither was the team.

For the Celtics, Bird had major injuries in 1985 and 88, which really limited his offense. I think Thinking Basketball summarized it well in his top 40 article: "All told, when Bird was “healthy” during the playoffs, from 1984-88, he averaged 27.2 points per game on 59 percent true shooting. In the 15 games after the bar fight, and in games he fought through shin splints, he averaged 21.3 points per game on 49 percent true shooting. This could be normal variance or great defensive work, but the inconsistency in his scoring strongly correlated with these injuries." The 1987 Celtics also had Ainge/McHale/Parish injured in the 2nd round and McHale/Walton/Wedman injured in the finals. Honestly that Celtics dynasty is in contention for the dynasty that was hurt most by injuries.

In both cases, these teams had injuries to key players which affected their playoff offenses, right in the middle of the timespan we'd otherwise predict to be their best offensive run. When looking at multi-year playoff-heavy stats, we should definitely remember we're measuring the value of a somewhat injured run. I suppose we could filter out the games the player missed or the games when the player was playing through an injury when calculating these stats to get a value for their 'healthy offensive run', though obviously there'd be some uncertainty in the filtering and we'll never know for sure how good the offenses would have been if they were healthy.

Yep, there's definitely trade offs. With regular season, we don't get a sense of teams doing full-effort adjustments for every matchup adjustments without load management (especially more recently, when teams are doing more playoff matchup adjustments and more regular season load management... less of an issue back in the day)

For playoffs, you get smaller sample size issues (so e.g. shooting noise can create significant error from true offensive value), occasionally more health issues (e.g. injury prone players could be playing injured for a playoff round or two, whereas players usually aren't playing injured for 25–50% of the regular season), and sometimes matchup issues (since you face a smaller sample size of opponents in the playoffs, an unusually easy / hard matchup could over/underrate your team rating compared to your true offensive value against all reasonable/possible matchups).

With KD, the Warriors actually did produce the best playoff offense while the stars were on the court... the difference just came from when the stars were off the court! There was a thread about this a while back (found it! here: https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?p=108512638#p108512638) and Curry produced the best on-court playoff offensive rating of the decade (and on record) for 1 year, 2 year, and 5 year runs. Kawhi sneaks ahead in 3 year runs if we allow the playoff runs to be non-consecutive; Durant sneaks ahead in 3-year runs if we force the playoff runs to be consecutive. Note that at the 3-year consecutive window, we're forced to either choose and heavily weigh a year where the Warriors either a) lost a significant amount of talent (2019) or b) where Curry was injured (2016), so it makes sense his on-sample might be lower in this timespan.

You could convert these to relative offensive ratings and my bet would be you'd get a similar trend, though it would be somewhat irksome to calculate the average opponent defensive rating weighted by number of possessions played against each opponent... and we'd have to run the calculation to be sure!

So the difference in (raw) team offensive rating between the Cavs and the Warriors actually just comes from when the stars are off the court. I suppose you could still use that to argue the Cavs are the better overall offensive team. But it seems a bit different to say something like
Option A) Playoff Lebron + help offense >= Playoff prime Curry + Durant offense... but only because Cavaliers help is better offensively than the Warriors help when LeBron, Curry, Durant are on the bench (which would be true, at least statistically)
...compared to something like
Option B) Playoff Lebron + help offense >= Playoff prime Curry + Durant offense... but only because LeBron + help actually produce better offenses when LeBron's on the court than Curry + Durant when they're on the court (which would not be true, at least statistically)

Either way, there's still plenty of noise and uncertainty here -- more than enough to argue for either the Warriors or the Cavs as being the best offensive playoff team of the decade IMO. But I think it's good to be clear. There's plenty of room for confusion or miscommunication when translating a team performance stat to a player (some of the strong team performance may be from the player in question, some of the performance may come from when the player was on the bench).
