If Embiid had chosen to play for France...

Post#1 » by ardee » Tue Jul 16, 2024 11:10 pm

How close do you think they'd get to the US?

Remember in that case the only American bigs would be Davis and Bam (who is 6'9), and they'd be up against a team with Webmy, Gobert and Embiid.

Do you think we'd see all three bigs on the court at the same time?

Are we seeing a lot of Gobert/Wemby lineups? If so, disregard this.

But, probably not even 2 for any long stretches. Occasional Embiid/Wemby lineup for short runs to give a different look.

Not much. His game doesn't translate well to fiba basketball or the playoffs.

We do see those line-ups and part of it is that playing two bigs in FIBA is still much more common and feasible (no defensive 3 seconds rule, smaller courts, worse perimeter talent on opposing teams, etc.).

I'm no Embiid fan, but I think it's been a lot more about his health and conditioning in the playoffs than his actual game. Was clearly hobbled these last playoffs and was still pretty dominant.

If health and conditioning are issues in every playoffs then it's not exactly a one-off. Beyond that though, he seems more susceptible to the vagaries of NBA officiating more than any player I can remember, except for maybe Harden.

Embiid has been trash in Fiba play. His foul baiting doesnt work with the referees there. Ad has been our best big and player overall. Even Bam has been better than Embiid in this ruleset and officiating.

His foul provocations find no purchase in the discerning eyes of the FIBA referees.

I would love to see a France team playing Embiid, Gobert, and Wemby in a 2-3 zone with Nicolas Batum and Bilal Coulibaly up front. With FIBA's smaller courts and no 3 seconds, that would be a ridiculously amazing defense.
