Kuminga's agent is saying he's looking for a max extention

Post#1 » by penbeast0 » Fri Aug 9, 2024 4:29 pm

Anyone else find this ridiculous and think if he gets it it will instantly overtake Brad Beal for the worst contract in the NBA?

I have him as a slightly below average starting forward in the league with strong athleticism, average of below basketball IQ, and meh outside shooting.

I doubt he'll get it, just posturing.

That being said, I think Pat Williams and Jonathan Isaac got more than expected, and so I won't be surprised if he gets north of $20 mil per.

Not even clear he's worth the MLE at this point.

He certainly seems to at least have health on Williams and Isaac though both are better players when healthy at this point in their respective careers.

I imagine it'll come down to how he looks this season. Increased role and another year under his belt, expectations are pretty high. On paper he looks good with 16 PPG on 60% TS% in limited minutes as a 21-year-old, in reality he's very one-dimensional and has no bag which doesn't bode well for playoff ball. So extending him now seems silly. He'll have to prove he took the leap this year, in which case yeah he's getting a bag.

This is the year for him to make an impact leap. He has physical tools to be a good defender but was largely mediocre last year and likely will never be good enough of an offensive player to be a second option type for a contending team.

Despite having low basketball IQ Kuminga was above average last year because his drive is very good and he is well above average for athleticism.

If he can improve as much over this summer as he did over las summer there is no doubt that healthy improved Kuminga will deserve a max contract.

Kuminga can on ball defend. Not as good at off ball defending.

Kuminga has a strangely slow first step towards rebounds during which just watches the rebounds fall which holds down his rebounding numbers.

I am expecting a efficient 26 points per game this season from Kuminga with his points coming mostly from drives and Kuminga starting to draw fouls this year on those drives.

Kuminga in his 3 years in the league has gone from 20 pp36, to 17, to 22 while his minutes have steadily increased from 17 to 21 to 26. His efficiency and shotmaking have not changed dramatically. I don't see any basis for a jump to 26 points per game, though in a featured role it wouldn't surprise me to see 20 a la Kyle Kuzma with a superior interior game.

This expectation will appear a lot more justifiable at the end of this coming season. Klay's departure opens a huge opportunity for Kuminga to up his usage and I bet he cashes in. 21 PPG on 59% TS, 6 RPG and decent defense would get a super athletic 22 year old wing huge offers in FA.
