Plain and Simple thread as always ... In today's game who you pick?

Glen Rice Or Peja Stojakovic?

Wanted to get this up b4 the wknd.

Since Y'all so fixated on 3 point line and spreading the floor (and for good reasons), I'm really curious to see how Y'all choose, when It comes to 2 great shooters, who're basically Identical Inregards to stats, including 3 point shooting

Soooo curious to see the results of this one :) and hopefully reasons behind them :)

Happy wknd all !!!

Rice was quicker, more explosive but more streaky, better handles, could probably play either wing. Peja was bigger, more consistent, could play PF in today's game. Neither was known for good defense.

Pretty close; it would come down to system, team needs, and how you feel the personalities would mix.

Was Rice really streaky? He took fewer threes and shot better inside the arc, while shooting about the same from 3.

Unrelated, but I love that he played exactly 1,000 games in the RS. It's just a nice, round number, heh.

I'd trust Rice more as my team's #1 scorer to build around. If its a #2 role I'd still slightly favor Glen and at #3 probably Peja due to his floor spacing at the 4.

If you were to put them In today's teams let's say;
Lakers, Celtics, Knicks and another west team like OKC, which team would pick which player? In your opinion?? :)

I'll note

Rice's three highest volume 3pt shooting seasons in terms of 3s attempted per game come in the 3 shortened line seasons.
Three of Rice's four highest accuracy 3pt shooting seasons come in the 3 shortened line seasons.
It's age 27-29 it's not wild that he's peaking then ...
he's .435085008 on the short line; .382782475 on the full line.

Peja's '04 box peak is, at least across the board in the Reference aggregates, the better (and this ties in to the above, Rice's peak is with the shortened line).

Due to above, before any serious dive, I'd be inclined towards PS.

I like the comparison and it's another difficult one for me. I'm not going go dive into the efficiency stats and try to split hairs for a projection, I've had a brief look at the traditional adv stats and there's probably a slight favouring towards Peja, but hardly anything I'd stake as the foundation of an argument, some general comments are:

It's easier for me to assess Peja, as his specific shooting skillset is a very comfortable fit in today's game and in my opinion the better 'pure shooter'. The off ball movement, catch/shoot and 2-3 dribble pull ups are easy to encapsulate and say - well that's gonna work in the modern power forward role. There is also just something intangibly, that I can't put my finger on, perhaps its the leadership/hoops IQ aspect to his game that I think is superior to Rice (who had some bad habits).

I do think talent wise Rice has the higher modern ceiling. A more dynamic scorer, with an exceptional stroke himself and was probably more effective off the dribble including a range of counters if the space wasn't there. The only question for me is, is that skillset that special/unique in today's era? Or does it simply reflect the foundation of what many wings are expected to have? Sure it translates but to what level of impact? If there was a stronger all round game to support it I'd be less hesitant but that's not really the case.

The defensive side of the ball for both would be a challenge - overall I lean 55/45 in Peja's favour for the comparison, probably a conservative approach, and I can understand the argument for Rice.

This is a good point and one I forgot about but as a counterpoint, Rice played almost a decade earlier than Peja. 3 point shooting was a rarer and less used and practiced skill so he stands out from his contemporaries more (assuming both are going considered SFs; if you are playing them at SG or PF it may change that equation too). And presumably, Rice would benefit a bit more from modern coaching, playstyle, conditioning, etc. as those were more primitive in his day. So, I would say it's still pretty close.

That's venturing a bit into the teeth of how does one do time travel ... is Peja better because he is more modern and has less adaptation to do. Is Rice better because he get more benefit.
I hate dismissing older guys as sucking because of circumstances re coaching, training, rules etc
I don't love ... well we'll give this player an entirely different childhood (or X many months in the gym) and pretend we know with confidence what comes of that.

When it comes down to it too, what do we know of Peja's coaching versus Rice's. What do we know of modern guys ... over their lives. Maybe some can try to adjust for that for specific players (rather than giving broad strokes context about era norms) with any confidence ... not me.

For these guys, they're chronologically close enough for me not to get hung up on it anyway. In any case, as you say (at least based on my superficial glances) it is close.

Similar but I trust Peja more. The prime job for both of them is to hit long rannge shots.

True but even without the shorter line, he consistently shot in the high '30s. When they moved it back to its original distance in '97-'98, he shot better from three than he did in two of three seasons with the shorter line.
