Higher trade value: Jokic or SGA?

Post#1 » by iggymcfrack » Sun Feb 2, 2025 3:03 am

Bill Simmons’ new trade value list got me thinking about this. My first reaction was SGA because he’s younger and he’s almost even with Jokic right now, but the more I think about it the more I’m not sure.

Jokic is 29, about to turn 30. SGA’s just over 26.5. That’s not a huge difference. Also, Jokic is likely to age better than anyone with his below the rim game. But then again, SGA is a late bloomer who doesn’t rely much on athleticism so he’s way on the right side of the aging curve as well. Then there’s the fact that SGA’s making $15MM/year less through 26/27.

Thoughts? I’m genuinely torn here. I don’t know which one I’d pick.

I’d probably lean SGA because Jokic has had some weird interviews about wanting to retire to raise horses in Serbia. He doesn’t strike me as a guy who will be grinding it out for the assists record at age 40

Both have the same value. AD, Christie, Markieff and one FRP

"Almost even" in what regard? You mean they're almost equal in on-court value right now?

over a certain level, the value is limited to what a team can offer them while holding on enough to stay competitive after acquiring them.

Still Jokic. The ability to make teammates better is the most valuable commodity there is and I'm not sure if we've ever had a player more able to do this than Jokic.

I don't see SGA as being one of those guys that would have the same impact in every situation, on every team. Meaning if he was for some reason traded or signed somewhere else as a FA. He's more of in the right place at the right time. Jokic on the other hand, his skillset is more portable and impactful even if his role was slightly changed.

As we were discussing on the T&T Board (where Jokic was #2 in trade value and SGA was #3), I don’t think this is particularly close. SGA is an amazing player, Jokic is an amazing player that makes everyone around him considerably better. SGA is much closer to Giannis, Luka and Tatum (4,5,6 in our rankings) than he is to Jokic.

If SGA was turning 24 instead of 27 I'd say him but Jokic is only about 3.25 years older and has the perfect game for aging. I think I'd go with the best player and consistent playoff performer in Jokic.
