Can we have a points per 100 possessions (or perpossession) adjusted by league average offensive rating

Is it possible to find/have a career ranking (or not necessarily ranking also just data for some players) of points per 100 possessions or per possession but also adjusted by league average offensive rating during different years of player's career

pp100* ts+/100 might be a somewhat easy way to do what you are looking for. So a 40pp100 season with efficiency of 110 ts+ would become a 44.

Hmm. Not sure I'm clear on what you want.

b-r has TS+ which speaks to TS% relative to league average, and they do provide that for career, but which doesn't factor in volume.
And it has TS Add which basically multiplies that by volume.

Now, adjusting for league TS% isn't the same thing as adjusting for team ORtg which factors in rebounding, turnovers, etc, but I'd tend to see that as a good thing. If you want ORtg instead, can you explain why exactly?

I wanted a points per 100 possession ranking which im sure it's fairly easy to find or to do. but since in different times there were different league average points per possession i wanted to adjust for that

So you want, what, (PTS100 / lgavPTS100)*100 in ranked form for players within a volume/games played threshold?

Something like this?

Code: Select all

         Name                Pts/100   Lg/100   Season   Adj./100
1   James Harden              48.21   110.40   2018-19   43.67
2   Kobe Bryant*              45.63   106.20   2005-06   42.97
3   Michael Jordan*           46.43   108.30   1986-87   42.87
4   Joel Embiid               47.35   114.80   2022-23   41.25
5   Russell Westbrook         44.80   108.80   2016-17   41.18
6   Shai Gilgeous-Alexander   46.19   113.90   2024-25   40.55
7   Tracy McGrady*            42.01   103.60   2002-03   40.55
8   Michael Jordan*           43.55   108.00   1987-88   40.32
9   Joel Embiid               45.14   112.00   2021-22   40.30
10   Giannis Antetokounmpo    46.22   114.80   2022-23   40.26

Use Ben Taylor's inflation adjusted scoring rate formula

For example, 2017 LeBron:
LeBron: (pts/100 * 75/100 possessions) * (2024 ORtg / 2017 ORtg) -> (34.9 * 0.75) * (115.3 / 108.8) = 27.7 IA pts/75

*numbers adjusted to 2024 season

This is a solid suggestion.

Joel Embiid is the #1 scorer for 10 year prime relative to league? I didn't see that one coming.

I see you prorated the active players. That gives Embiid and Doncic an advantage for smaller sample size creating greater variability plus not having the late career dropoff typical for most players after 30.

Looks to me like Embiid is #2 behind Jordan in the 10-year numbers provided. The chart is just ordered by career numbers, and he’s #1 in the career numbers (though likely will drop from there by the time his career ends).

Even second is a bit of a shock to me; I wouldn't have guessed he'd be top 3 in the last 5 years even; top 5 would have been about where I'd have guessed.
