Your mid season All NBA selections

Post#1 » by durantbird » Sat Feb 15, 2025 2:53 pm

I assume guys like Giannis or AD won't be eligible so I'm not including him. If you think he will be, you can include them. A guy like Luka is officially disqualified by now. Durant seems borderline but I'll also disqualify him based on this concern.

My picks:

SGA
Mitchell
Tatum
Towns
Jokic

Curry
Brunson
LeBron
JJJ
Wemby

Garland
Edwards
Brown
JDub
Mobley

Tough to pick between Mobley and Sengun, also Garland and Harden

Hi durantbird,

all your teams have two guards, two forwards and a center (or three front court players). Was it a coincidence that it turned out like that? There are no position on the All-NBA teams anymore, but I'm not sure you were aware when you made the post (because the teams make sense, even under the new rules)?

Yeah I just wanted to comment that I forgot All NBA are positionless as well now. Don't know if it changes anything for me. Last year it only affected All NBA Third that had three guards instead of two

So Davis/Doncic/Morant/Embiid/Wagner/Banchero/Butler/George/Kawhi/Zion have no chance to get into ALLNBA selections.

Durant missed 13 games (4 games left to miss)
Giannis missed 12 games (5 games left to miss)
Irving missed 12 games (5 games left to miss)
Curry missed 9 games (8 games left to miss)
Lillard missed 9 games (8 games left to miss)
Brown missed 9 games (8 games left to miss)

So what we have here - 30 players

C Jokic/JJJ/Sengun/Sabas/Wemby/Bam/Town
PF Mobley/Lebron/Durant/Giannis/Tatum/Siakam
SF J-Will/Brown
SG Mitchell/Edwards/Booker/Herro/Shai
PG Curry/Lillard/Irving/Brunson/Young/Fox/Garland/Harden/Cunningham/Hali

So ALLNBA teams would look like this at the momment

1st Jokic/Shai/Tatum/Giannis if eligible/Lebron
2nd Wemby/Edwards/Mitchell (1st team if Giannis out)/Brunson/Town
3rd JJJ/Mobley/J-Will/Cunningham/Curry

Harden and Siakam would be next if Giannis and Cuury are not eligible.

Edited after the Wemby news.

With the change to positionless, I feel pretty strongly about Shai/Jokic/Giannis/Tatum as the first team, and then I suppose Mitchell to round them out (with Luka, Kawhi, Davis, Wemby, and Embiid all already ineligible) as the “most deserving among the rest”. If Giannis ends up missing too many games… I am not sure. Through the all-star break I might take Lebron, but he has a lot more variance in his expected rest of season outcome than most do.

Second team would be Steph, Brunson, Edwards, Lebron, and JJJ.

Third team is then more forward heavy, with Harden, JWill, Siakam, Mobley, and Towns. Top replacements for me (if Giannis or someone else misses the cutoff) are Haliburton or Cunningham, and as a tiebreaker I think I would prefer to give the Pistons some representation.

If we went by the traditional standard, I would have:

Shai/Mitchell/Tatum/Giannis/Jokic
Brunson/Edwards/Lebron/JJJ/Towns
Steph/Harden/Siakam/Mobley/Sabonis.

I have my aesthetic preference for this latter one, but I acknowledge the new rule fixes the long-held issue of guard over-representation. Had the new rule been present from the start, centres like Thurmond and Lanier would be far more properly recognised, and we would not see the constant shuffling of Duncan/Garnett/Dirk/Lebron in the 2000s while Kobe racked up first-teams at the guard position pretty much regardless of whether he performed like a true top five player that year.

This is honestly kinda painful with the new eligibility rules. I don't feel great about a lot of these. Not sure who gets the last 1st team spot if Giannis is ruled out - maybe JJJ?

First: SGA, Tatum, Giannis (for now), Jokic, Wemby
Second: Brunson, Mitchell, LeBron, JJJ, KAT
Third: Curry, Garland, Ant, J-Dub, Mobley

Irving/Powell are out and JJJ week to week with ankle injury

1st Jokic/Giannis/Tatum/Shai/Mitchell
2nd KAT/JJJ/Lebron/Brunson/Curry
3rd Mobley/JDub/Edwards/Sakiam/Cunningham

HM Sengun/Sabonis/Garland/Brown

I despise the new eligibility rules. 65 games is okay but 64 means you're out? How many guys in NBA history would have lost out on an All-NBA selection because of this? How about we trust voters to decide who merits selection without imposing this arbitrary participation floor?

I agree, but the Grumpy Oldhead Brigade has everyone thinking players are missing games because "they don't want to compete" or some nonsense, so the NBA felt compelled to respond accordingly.

So Brunson is out

1st Jokic/Giannis/Tatum/Shai/Mitchell
2nd KAT/Lebron/Edwards/Cunningham/Curry
3rd Sengun/Mobley/Siakam/JDub/Harden or JJJ

Harden .399 FG and 4.4 tovs to 8.6 ast are red flag for me, but if LAC will finish higher than MEM, let it be...

Man, we could make another ALL-NBA teams list from these players and no one could say it would be significantly worse

man that's a crazy list of people who are ineligible. i kind of liked the eligibility rules when they added them, not because people were being lazy but just because it feels like there should be a cut-off, but we're missing a fairly decent chunk of the field. although i can't say how many of them actually played enough for me to consider them even without the cut-off. luka would make it. durant feels like he's played enough (whether he should actually be on the team is another question). i didn't even realize garland has missed a bunch.
