Who wins this all-time tournament?

Post#1 » by scrabbarista » Tue Jun 24, 2025 11:31 pm

I'm simming this on 2K... The question is who'd win for real, not who you think wins on 2K.

NOTE: Don't vote for "Other" as the field, but with a specific team in mind.

1. '17 Warriors + '72 Chamberlain
8. '02 Kings + '02 Kidd

4. '00 Lakers + '91 Drexler
5. '11 Mavericks + '80 Abdul-Jabbar

3. '14 Spurs + '74 Cowens
6. '20 Lakers + '63 Russell

2. '85 Lakers + '06 Wade
7. '18 Rockets + '71 Abdul-Jabbar

----------------

1. '96 Bulls + '95 Olajuwon
8. '19 Raptors + '86 Olajuwon

4. '67 Sixers + '20 Antetokounmpo
5. '12 Heat + '77 Walton

3. '83 Sixers + '08 Garnett
6. '93 Bulls + '99 Duncan

2. '86 Celtics + '03 Duncan
7. '75 Warriors + '14 Chris Paul

I know it's a big field, so feel free to just comment on a specific matchup or team if you want.

I'm inclined to go with Team 1. The shooting gravity of Curry/Thompson/Durant combined with the paint gravity of Chamberlain, with Green facilitating, would be tremendous. And defensively, having Chamberlain protect the rim frees up Green to roam even more and cause havoc.

Obviously 95 Olajuwon was massive and probably the best playoff performance of any player included in this hypothetical tournament even. Added to the Bulls in really not fair, add him to the 2011 Mavs and that team would raise significantly more and probably compete well here.

On paper, 17 warriors as maybe the best team ever with wilt added to center just "feels" like the answer. But it's hard to say how much wilt adds to what the warriors were doing, other than trying to keep wilt off the offensive glass after you chase the 3 shooters around seems impossible.

On the other hand, upgrading Clint capela to damn near peak Kareem is just a massive step up for a dominant 2018 rockets. And the rockets were basically a my turn/your turn iso team so kareem doesn't really take anything away on offense and gives massive rim protection on defense.

Same goes for upgrading luc longley to 1995 Olajuwon for arguably also the best team ever in the 96 bulls. Hakeem wasn't quite at his defensive peak but it's still an upgrade to a team with 3 1st team defenders and now you are giving secondary shot creation to Hakeem over pippen, which is enormous.

Those feels like the 3 teams to beat. Although Duncan added to the 86 Celtics feel absurd, only arguably less so because it's basically already the GOAT frontcourt.

What would be unfair to add to the 01 Lakers? 1995 Reggie?

Didn't really evn notice 77 Walton on 12 heat. Obviously all these teams depend on the era, but Walton arguably fits in great as a great defender who can distribute and doesn't need the ball. He messes up the small ball of 2012 bit as a traditional team I could see them being really tough in the past.

02 kings plus 02 kidd is my last place pick.

Gotta go with the ‘18 Rockets plus ‘71 Kareem. They were already looking like beating the Warriors before Chris Paul got hurt and there’s no reason to think he’d necessarily get hurt again this time around. ‘71 Kareem is a WAY better player than ‘72 Wilt and given how well he fit with elite PGs, I imagine he’d do great next to CP3 and Harden.

‘95 Hakeem is an incredibly dominant season to add to the ‘96 Bulls and they’d be monsters on defense, but IDK that they really have the floor spacing to outplay the modern teams. Jordan was the only player of the top 8 rotation guys who shot over 33% from three in the playoffs.

The 83 sixers are so loaded that KG might be coming off the bench. A team with 3 MVPs 6 all-stars and a GOAT level coach with maybe the best defense in this tourney.

Some of the older teams would benefit more with added shooting especially if we are talking about playing in the current era, even if they may have been relatively weaker at other positions in their time.
