All Primes: 1998 Suns vs 1990 Spurs

Post#1 » by SelakStreet » Thu Jul 31, 2025 3:58 am

Who would get the series victory in a best of 7 with all players in their primes, while using the full 12-man rotation?

Sidebar: pre-season exclusive players (such as Tom Chambers & Stephen Jackson for the '98 Suns and Kermit Washington for the '90 Spurs) are included, thus they count regardless.

1998 Phoenix Suns:
PG: Jason Kidd / Kevin Johnson / Steve Nash
SG: Rex Chapman / Stephen Jackson
SF: Cedric Ceballos / George McCloud
PF: Clifford Robinson / Danny Manning / Tom Chambers
C: Antonio McDyess / Hot Rod Williams

1990 San Antonio Spurs:
PG: Rod Strickland / Johnny Moore
SG: Willie Anderson / David Wingate
SF: Sean Elliott / Mike Mitchell / Reggie "Silk" Williams
PF: Terry Cummings / Frank Brickowski / Kermit Washington
C: David Robinson / Caldwell Jones

I think prime Suns take this one quite easily. Their guard rotation alone is vastly superior to the Spurs. Then you add prime Ceballos and Tom Chambers? After D.Rob, you can argue the Suns have the 2nd to 6th best players, depending where you put prime Terry Cummings.

Strickland at his best was in his Wizards years, mid to late 90s, and he was one of the top PGs, mostly offensive minded, not as good as Kidd but counters him well. Elliott at his best was slightly better than Ceballos, though it is close. He is more of a perimeter player but creates better for others definitely. Cummings at his best was arguably slightly better than Chambers, being clearly better defensively and scoring well in his time in Milwaukee in the 80s. Robinson is far superior to McDyess and is clearly the best player on both ends in this matchup so the Spurs are a bit better.
