Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg - 25-26 Thread

2024-25 Record: 39-43 (10th in West, lost in Play-In Tournament)
The Mavs will open training camp with a new franchise cornerstone in Cooper Flagg, a deep frontline headlined by Anthony Davis, a new point guard in D’Angelo Russell – while Kyrie Irving recovers from last season’s torn ACL – and renewed expectations to challenge for the playoffs in the deep Western Conference.
Dallas’ roster shakeup dates back to Feb. 2, when the Mavs traded Luka Dončić to the Lakers for Davis, Max Christie and future draft picks. It continued on June 25, when the Mavs selected Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. In July, Dallas reached contract extensions with both Irving and P.J. Washington, while resigning Danté Exum and signing free agent Russell to help bolster the backcourt while Irving recovers. Davis enters his first full season in Dallas as the centerpiece of the Dončić return, giving Dallas a deep rotation of bigs when paired with Flagg, Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II and Dwight Powell.
Offseason
Re-signing: Danté Exum, Daniel Gafford (extension), Kyrie Irving, Dwight Powell (player option exercised), P.J. Washington (extension)
Additions: D’Angelo Russell (free agent)
Draft: Cooper Flagg (1st pick)
Departures: Spencer Dinwiddie (free agent)
Unsigned Free Agents: N/A

Hell yeah. I love this team man. It's what Demon Nico put together. A squad!

Let's be real. Mavs won the Chuka trade.

Speaking as someone who doesn't follow offseason moves at all, these first posts are a godsend. Thank you.

Not a bad look AD.
I'm interested to see what Davis can do as the clear team lead again, kind of glad we got to see that again while he's still in his prime.
Lot hinging on a rookie being good and Kyrie coming back well, guard rotation is quite weak until he's back. Pretty wide range for the Mavs, I think I'm expecting on the lower side and them being a play-in sort of squad. Wouldn't be shocked if it worked out better than that.

How much time are people expecting Kyrie to miss? Back before all star?

Nobody really knows. He's on the court doing stuff and looks physically really good. Kidd talked about Thanksgiving(though I think he must have meant an update then, but the wording was confusing). But Kyrie has been adamant the whole time he's got no interest in coming back until he feels 100% so I would expect post all-star to be the most likely.
The question is can Dallas hang in the play-in mix until he can get back and ramp up? And what does a first round meeting with OKC or the other top seed really do for them if they can get into the top 8?
They don't look like a serious team right now with this guard rotation. Or just not playing guards at all lol.

Cooper Flagg is starting to look seriously good.
His free throw shooting, rebounding, and playmaking is starting to stand out.
Based on his entire history, the three point shooting is a lock to be elite, and regression to the mean will strike hard.
By the end of the year I expect he's gonna be a regular 20 / 6 / 4 guy on solid efficiency.
It's clear he has what it takes to be an impact guy at this level.

OT (for this thread), Aaron Gordon averaged 68.3% from the line for the first ten years of his career (74% in his best season). Last season 81%, this season 94% so far. Small sample size, but also career high in attempts so far.

I think Flagg is going to be a great passer.

I mean it took KG 2-3 years to figure it out and he had the adv of being a 6-10 super freak. Flagg is still 18 so he's so far from even being near his prime. Even if he only avged like 15/6/3 on sort of bad efficiency it means nothing in the long term even though some people would act like it means he's a flop. He won't even be entering his prime until his next contract. The biggest thing Flagg has going for him imo is his work ethic.
